1934: CENTER CITY TRENTON, 81 YEARS AGO

Were it not for the incredible tweaking features available in Adobe's "PhotoShop" I would never be able to make light areas darker and dark areas lighter, sharpen the focus, change from sepia to gray scale and countless other "tweaks" that result in an historic R.C. Maxwell photo showing the old Hotel Windsor, Woolworth's, and for the real old timers, I will see how many can identify that huge arched architectural gem on the immediate left in the photo, across the street from Trenton's beautiful First Presbyterian Church. Hint: "TSFS."

1936: WOOLWORTH'S FIVE AND DIME RENOVATED

Explain this please: Why did ham and eggs, bacon and eggs, all with toast and coffee, taste better at the counter of the five and dime.....whether Woolworth's or Kresge's? Same for that morning cup of coffee and a donut. Explain it if you can. I can't, but I can tell you that there was something about eating at those counters that planted a thing in our minds that it tasted better here than "there." When I was dating my dear wife Judy there were many times when I drove her downtown for her job at Yard's. We made many early morning stops for breakfast at Clede's Luncheonette on E. Hanover Street. The very same "it tastes better here" thing happened! Completely beyond explanation. It must be a mental fixation.

For those not familiar with Woolworth's, it was what we called a five & dime store and they had soda fountains in the stores. When I was a kid, we ate lunch everyday at Newberry's, another five and dime with a fountain. You could leave the school grounds for lunch back in those days and we would all walk downtown. Best hotdog I've ever had and all of 25 cents if I remember correctly... Yummmmmmmmm! !!

An oldie coming around again.

I wondered who to send this to - who would actually remember Woolworth's and eating at a Woolworth's.

It is a good memory. Isn't it fun just to receive an email that doesn't make you crazy but just brings back good memories?
