1979: A REPEAT OF AN ERINIE KOVACS POST

Ernie Kovacs was a very popular national figure back in the 1960's. Naturally, Trentonians were very proud of his national status as a one of the great comedians of all time. This excellent piece by Mr. Izzard from the Trentonian of 1979 is well worth preserving for future generations.

1979:ERNIE KOVACS - A TRENTON LEGEND

I remember listening to Ernie way back in WTTM days. His transition to television was really the beginning of his career as a national and world wide personality. My memory is hazy but I seem to remember Ernie being on Philadelphia's WPTZ channel 3 back in the black and white 10 inch TV years. He was a guy with an imagination that allowed him to bring all those funny things he imagined to life and when he brought them to the public, he was absolutely hilarious. My favorite Kovacs figment was "Percy Dovetonsils." As I write this I am smiling ear to ear as I recall those coke bottle glasses and those eyes! He died much too young, and had he lived, he would probably have gone on to a late night show that would put today's funny guys to shame.

This graphic was mistakenly paired with the Holy Cross girls WWII letter writing project as seen in the preceding post. Thanks to Mike Kuzma for pointing out the error. Yesterday morning was a very busy morning for me with 3 interruptions by visitors which resulted in Mike Kuzma being moved from the Trenton High 1952 graphic, to a 1962 Trenton High commencement story. Let's just call it a bad day, and realize that Tom Glover is rapidly losing his ability at "multi-tasking." Time was when I could manage 4 things at a time; now I seem to have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time.

What a different Ernie Kovacs! No mustache, no cigar, no Percy Dovetonsils character; just a young thespian learning the craft.
