1984: THE WHITE HORSE VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY

White Horse is one of the more interesting sections of Hamilton insofar as local history is concerned. The McGalliards, McLains, Gropps, Parents, Chapmans and Sharps, along with many other old time families have logged hours of interesting local historical facts. The White Horse Volunteer Fire Company also has an interesting historical heritage.

HI TOM....THE VOLUNTEEER FIRE COMPANIES IN HAMILTON ALL HAD VERY SUCESSFUL CARNIVALS IN THE 1930 AND 40'S THAT HELPED WITH THEIR OPERATION. ALONG WITH THEIR BANQUET HALLS THEY MANAGED TO PERFORM VERY WELL. WE ALWAYS FELT SAFE DURING THE YEARS WE LIVED THERE. REGARDS.

1986: White Horse Volunteer Fire Col New Fire House

This was a very special occasion not only for White Horse area citizens, but perhaps even more for the guys and gals of the White Horse Volunteer Fire Company. This graphic has been appropriately enhanced and colored to recognize this impressive fire company expansion. As Hamilton has grown, so too has the need for a viable fire district in the burgeoning township. The next graphic shows the new pumper which was also dedicated.

1933: CARNIVAL SEASON AT WHITE HORSE

Many familiar Hamilton pioneer names in the article above. Carnivals were one of the more popular fund raisers of volunteer fire companies all over America during the 20's, 30's and into the 40's.

1914: LADIES' AUXILIARY WHITE HORSE VFD

THE LADIES' AUXILIARY OF THE WHITE HORSE VOLUNTEER FIRE CO. WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1914, JUST WHEN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ORGANIZED. THE VARIOUS LADIES AUXILIARIES FROM ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS ARE INDISPENSABLE, ALWAYS THERE GIVING OF THEIR TIME AND LABORS.

THERE ARE MANY NAMES IN THE ABOVE PHOTO WHO WERE VERY PROMINENT MEMBERS OF HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, AND IN THIS CASE, THE WHITE HORSE AREA.

OVER THE YEARS I HAVE WRITTEN A NUMBER OF "THE WAY WE WERE" COLUMNS WHICH HIGHLIGHTED OUR LOCAL HEROES WHO WE ALL KNOW AS VOLUNTEER FIREMEN (AND WOMEN). THIS INTERESTING COLUMN TELLS OF A FUND RAISING CARNIVAL BEING HELD BY THE WHITE HORSE VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY, FOUNDED IN 1914.

1914: EARLY ITEM ON THE NEW WHITE HORSE VFD

FUND RAISERS OF ALL SORTS WERE THE FLAVOR OF THE DAY FOR THE LOCAL VOLUNTEER "FIRE LADDIES" AS THEY WERE CALLED BACK THEN. HAMILTON'S NUMEROUS VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS HAVE A SPLENDID HISTORICAL HERITAGE. THROUGH THE YEARS, THOUSANDS OF BRAVE CITIZENS HAVE GIVEN SELFLESSLY OF THEIR TIME TO PROTECT THEIR NEIGHBORS FROM THE RAVAGES OF FIRE.

AS AN INTERESTING ASIDE:

THESE TYPES OF ARTICLES ARE A WELLSPRING OF INTEREST TO THOSE WHO ARE SEEKING NAMES OF PROMINENT CITIZENS IN THE

VARIOUS NEIGHBORHOODS DEPICTED.

I wrote this column a number of years ago as a mini history of one of the wonderful volunteer fire companys who have served so selflessly in our community since the early part of the 20th century. No matter what the weather nor the hour, when that fire siren goes off, these ladies and men are right there to protect and serve.
