1935: HAMILTON "WPA" PROJECTS

I presume the WPA and PWA are identical entities during the years of the Great Depression. My father was one of those who worked for food and pay, as he was part of a crew extending Arena Drive out to White Horse back in the 1930's. As can be seen by the article, there were numerous projects on the books. The original of this article was badly tarnished brown with age, and the article was cut too close as an be seen in the first two columns. The original article was one column long; it has been cut and pasted to fit on the average computer screen in legible form.

These lovely ladies made up the Miss DiGiorgio's Groveville WPA dancing  class.

Great picture. Nice smiles on these kids faces, they must have liked Miss DiGiorgio. Quick guestimate these kids born near 1930 so some should still be with us, I hope one of them sees this picture:)

1935: E. STATE STREET EXTENSION

Now you know how E. State Street Extension from Klockner Road to Nottinhgam Way came into existance. My father worked on the WPA project that constructed Arena Drive back in the 1930's. WPA=Works Project Administration. It was a governmental program that assisted the unemployed who in turn upgraded our infrastructure. It was one of the Franklin Roosevelt administrations "New Deal" programs.

THEY CALLED IT THE WPA LIESURE TIME PROGRAM. IT WAS ONLY A FEW MONTHS EARLIER THAT THE STOCK MARKET CRASHED AND AMERICA WAS IN THE DEPTHS OF WHAT WAS KNOWN AS "THE GREAT DEPRESSION." SCENES LIKE THE ABOVE GRAPHIC WERE COMMON AS COMMUNITIES ALL OVER AMERICA.
