1944: TRENTON'S GOLDBERG'S OLD TIME EMPLOYEES

I tried posting this on Facebook and as usual the limits on graphic size rendered it illegible unless one has a 20 plus inch monitor which most of us do not. I have decided to publish only very small graphics on FB and save the good stuff here where it belongs.

1940's: SOUTH BROAD AT GOLDBERG'S

Hey, who knows? Were we to see across the street to the sidewalk in front of Goldberg's Department Store, one might see a young Tommy Glover walking with his mom to Goldberg's. Little Tommy was interested in the great "Toyland" at Goldberg's while mom was heading to the "Notions" counter for a stock of khaki wool for a sweater she was knitting for her eldest son Len who was over in England with the 8th Air Force. If I'm not mistaken that New Jersey Floor Covering sign was located on the site of the destructive fire that leveled their facility circa 1946 or 7.

1944: GOLDBERG "OLD TIMERS"

They were billed as the "Goldberg Old Timers Club" back in the day. I recognize Mr. John Geehan who went on to be the boss at Yard's Department store when my wife Judy worked at Yard's in the Infants' Wear Department. There are probably a number of visitors who may recognize other old timers from that era.

HI TOM....I CAN NEVER RECALL SHOPPING AT GOLDBERGS EXCEPT AT THE BARGAIN BASEMENT. WE JUST COULD'NT AFFORD THE REST OF THE STORE DURING THAT GREAT DEPRESSION. IT WAS EITHER GOLDBERGS OR GIMBELS. WHEN THINGS GOT BETTER IT WAS SWERNS AND DUNHAMS AND SOME OF THE STORES THAT CARRIED THE MORE EXPENSIVE GOODS. DURING THOSE DAYS TRENTON HAD A FAIR SHARE OF DEPARTMENT STORES. BEST REGARDS.

1934: A GOLDBERG'S TRENTON MERRY CHRISTMAS

Goldberg's was MY favorite store with their very well-stocked "TOYLAND." In one of  the many Christmas columns I have written over the past 25-plus years, the one I recall most vividly was detailing a trip to "Downtown Trenton" during the Christmas season. As a boy of r or 6, I remember asking my mother why Santa's beard moved when he talked, but his lips stayed in place. Ahh, the innocence of childhood!

HI TOM.... GOLDBERG'S BARGIN BASEMENT WAS OUR FAVORITE PLACE. I DO'NT THINK WE BOUGHT ANYTHING UPSTAIRS UNTIL THE LATE 30'S. WE ALSO PATRONIZED GIMBEL'S NEXT DOOR AND WHEN WE WANTED SOMETHING SPECIAL WE WENT TO SWERN'S, WHICH WAS RIGHT DOWN THE STREET AND SOLD MOSTLY BETTER PRODUCTS. DOWNTOWN TRENTON IN THOSE DAYS WAS LIKE VISITING SOMETHING SPECIAL AND WE ALWAYS ENJOYED IT, REGARDS.

1944: Goldberg's Toyland

"Toyland, toyland,
dear little girl and boy land.
While you are within it,
you are ever happy there.
Childhood joyland,
dear little girl and boy land,
Once you've passed its portals,
you can never return again..."

Thus wrote Victor Herbert many years ago. There's a special place in my memory for the visits I made to that magic place known as Goldberg's Toyland. I dare say many over 70 viewers share this sentiment.
