1913: WILBUR'S EZEKIEL VOORHEES

The above article tells of the exploits of still another veteran and hero from the Civil War as related to the Trenton area. Ezekiel Voorhees lived in the house shown in the Google Earth view at the corner of South Olden Avenue and Walnut Street. Due to the antiquity of the Wilbur area, it is a safe bet that the number 70 South Olden Avenue of 1913 is the very same 70 South Olden Avenue of today that is shown in the photo below.

1914: News From the Wilbur Section

Each week, the Times gave a page to the Chambersburg section of Trenton and also to the Wilbur section. Back then, the boundary between Trenton and Hamilton, even though it was actually So. Logan Avenue, many Bromley news items were included. This page has notes from East Trenton and South Trenton.

NOTE HOW DE LAVAL, ACME RUBBER AND OTHER HAMILTON TOWNSHIP FACTORIES HAVE BEEN REPORTED AS BEING IN THE WILBUR SECTION OF TRENTON, WHEN IN REALITY THEY ARE IN HAMILTON'S BROMLEY. THE MERCER AUTOMOBILE COMPANY IS ALWAYS PLACED IN TRENTON INSTEAD OF HAMILTON.

THE SMALL PIECE ABOVE RELATES TO PETER DOLAN, PROPRIETOR OF THE HAMILTON HOTEL IN BROMLEY. IT WAS LOCATED AT EAST STATE STREET AND WHITEHEAD ROAD, AND PROBABLY WAS ESTABLISHED IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE MANY OVERNIGHT VISITORS TO THE NEW JERSEY INTERSTATE FAIR, WHICH WAS JUST DOWN THE ROAD ON EAST STATE STREET IN HAMILTON.

I WONDERED IF THIS LAYTON FAMILY IS DESCENDED FROM THE JOE LAYTONS OF BUTTONWOOD AVENUE. A COUPLE YEARS AGO, I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM EDDIE LAYTON REGARDING AN ENTRY I POSTED ON THIS SITE. AT THAT TIME, EDDIE WAS A VIEWER OF THIS SITE.

CHECK OUT THE ENTRY, "NEW WILBUR" ON THIS MAP. VERY INTERESTING. BESIDES THE "BOROUGH OF WILBUR" EAST STATE STREET AND OLDEN AVENUE AREA, EARLY NEWS ACCOUNTS LOCATED WILBUR AS FAR OUT AS GARFIELD, LOGAN, AND DOWN TO THE LIBERTY STREET AREA.

1918: The Bloor Family of Old Wilbur

As I page through the local Trenton papers of the 1890's before Wilbur was annexed to the city of Trenton, I find very interesting historical material on what was known as the borough of Wilbur. One of the more familiar family names I run into is the Bloor family. The graphic tells the sad story of WWI American hero Spencer Bloor who was listed as missing in action.

1927: Closing the Circus Grounds

Today's "Junior Two" is built on part of the site of the old circus grounds; that area south of Greenwood Avenue and the Cuyler and South Olden Avenue area. In the 18th century, that area was the site of many appearances of "Buffalo Bill" and his Wild West Show, along with numerous other carnivals and circus acts.
