1909: WHERE ONCE STOOD CAMP PERRINE

When I saw this article and photo, I immediately hoped that it would indicate that the stables in the photo were a part of the Civil War campsite, "Camp Perrine." But alas, it was not to be. The Wilson and Stokes Company was a major supplier of lumber to many builders in the first decade of the 20th century. I recall the fire that destroyed the company, but I can't recall when it happened.

Hi Tom:)
This is the only item I could find
that mentions Wilson & Stokes:

Liberty Industrial Gases Founder Tucker Murray
Thomas L. (Tucker) Murray, 64, founder of Liberty Industrial Gases and Welding Supply, died on March 9. Mr. Murray got his start in the welding supply industry through his father-in-law at Wilson and Stokes in Trenton, NJ. In 1986, he started Liberty Industrial Gases and Welding Supply in Brooklyn, NY. A longtime member of GAWDA, Mr. Murray was known for his keen business sense and marketing abilities. His strong work ethic was passed on to his four children. The youngest, Ashley Murray, will continue to run the business. GAWDA members are welcome to attend a memorial service for Mr. Murray at the Friends Meeting House in Crosswicks, NJ, on March 31.

Thanks, Mack:

W & S was one of the more prominent supplier of lumber for the better part of the 20th century up to the 1950's. In the future, I will be posting advertising which indicates that they were located on part of "Camp Perrine," a locally famous Civil War camp.

Trenton Fire Chief Thomas J. Phelan reported that the biggest single fire loss to the City of Trenton in the year 1951 was the fire at Wilson and Stokes facility on February 25, 1951, reported to be in excess of $121,000.00

Hi Tom: I recall the W & S fire in the 50s. After that we used the place on Chambers St., right over the bridge. think it was called Lincoln Supply. My dear friend, Fred DeBronzo, built his house at 1005 Revere Ave. mostly from materials he purchased when they tore down the old Trenton High School at Hamilton and Chestnut Ave.

This for "Omad" in the post above.

Wilson and Stokes was off South Broad Street in the area of the County Building and the N.J. State Prison.

I'm sure another visitor can do a better pinpointing than I.
