Here's a thumbnail sketch of the doings in the little borough of Chambersburg during the week of January 9, 1888. The "Trenton and Crosswicks Turnpike" referred to is today's South Broad Street. In years past, the owners of the turnpike were very lax in keeping the road passable. In spring and fall, the rain caused much trouble as farmers traveling into the city of Trenton became mired in mud. In the Winter, the road was often impassable after a heavy snow fall. Toll houses were sprinkled along the route from Trenton down to Crosswicks. There was a toll house at the intersection of Cedar Lane and South Broad Street.
