FRED SAYEN ("SIGH-EN")

PLEASE.....THE LAST NAME IS SAYEN..."SIGH-EN." I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE CALL PRONOUNCE IT "SAY-EN," AND "SINE." HOW CAN I SPEAK SO AUTHORITATIVELY ON HOW THE LAST NAME IS PRONOUNCED? WELL, WHEN I WORKED FOR THE KUSERS BACK IN THE 40'S AND 50'S, A LOVELY LADY WAS A REGULAR VISITOR IN HER LITTLE 1947 FORD CLUB COUPE. HER NAME WAS JANE SAYEN AND YES, IT WAS PRONOUNCED, "SIGH-EN." PLEASE NOTE THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU VISIT "SIGH-EN" GARDENS. JANE LOVED TO PAINT. SHE GAVE ONE OF HER PAINTINGS TO FRITZ AND EDNA KUSER. IT WAS A PAINTING OF A CORNER OF THE KUSER HOUSE. I BELIEVE IT IS STILL HANGING IN THE KUSER MAIN FRONT LIVING ROOM.

THE MCGALLIARD ESTATE, WHITE HORSE

THIS PHOTO WAS FROM MS. ALICE MCGALLIARD BRADY VIA MS. ELEANOR ROGERS, A MEMBER OF THE HAMILTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY. THE BUILDING STILL STANDS AND IS OCCUPIED BY THE KINGSTON AND KEMP FUNERAL HOME ON WHITE HORSE AVENUE (WHITE HORSE-MERCERVILLE ROAD).

1949: REMEMBER THE CUSHMAN ":MOTOR SCOOTER?"

THAT'S MY BROTHER BUD TOOLING ALONG THE LAWN AT THE PETERS HOUSE ON HARTLEY AVENUE HILL BACK IN 1949. THE CUSHMAN HAD A CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH WHICH SLOWLY DROVE THE LITTLE VEHICLE FORWARD. IT WAS A DREAM TO DRIVE, AND EVERY KID IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WANTED ONE.

THOSE GREAT AUTOS FROM THE 1930'S

THEY WERE JUST BEGINNING TO EXPLORE THE CONCEPT OF "STREAMLINING" BACK IN THE MID THIRTIES WHEN THIS 8 CYLINDER GRAHAM WAS INTRODUCED. AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE AD, BOZARTH MOTORS IN YARDVILLE WERE DEALERS FOR THE GRAHAM. A FEW YEARS LATER IN 1939, GRAHAM CAME OUT WITH THE "SHARK NOSE" GRAHAM AND THE "HOLLYWOOD." BOTH WERE TRAILBLAZERS IN THE PURSUIT OF "STREAMLINING."

CAMP OLDEN CIVIL WAR RECRUITING POSTER

ASK ANY MEMBER OF HAMILTON'S "CIVIL WAR ROUNDTABLE," AND THEY WILL AFFIRM THAT THERE IS AN INDESCRIBABLE LURE TO THE STUDY OF AMERICA'S CIVIL WAR. CAMP OLDEN WAS LOCATED OVER IN THE KUSER ROAD, NEWKIRK AVENUR, HAMILTON AVENUE AREA. THE EXACT BOUNDARIES OF THE CAMP ARE QUITE ELUSIVE. I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR OVER 30 YEARS, AND ONLY FIND TANTALIZING NOTICES OF REAL ESTATE SALES OFFER LANDS ON PARTS OF THE OLD CAMP.

1912: THE BROMLEY INN CIRCA 1912

THE ORIGINAL PHOTO WAS A BLACK AND WHITE HIGH DEFINITION PHOTO. UNFORTUNATELY THERE WERE A NUMBER OF DEFECTS ON THE PRINT. I USED MY GRAPHICS SOFTWARE TO HAND COLOR THE PHOTO AND I THINK YOU WILL AGREE IT PRESENTS AN INTRIGUING SCENE.

REMEMBER FOY'S DRUG STORE? I DO.

ONE OF MY DEAR FRIENDS WHEN I WAS PRESIDENT OF THE HAMILTON TOWNSHIP HISTORICAL SOCIETY WAS MRS. ELEANOR FOY. ELEANOR AND HER HUSBAND DON WERE OPERATORS OF FOYS ON SOUTH BROAD STREET IN THE WHITE HORSE AREA OF HAMILTON. THERE ARE UNDOUBTEDLY MANY HAMILTONIANS WHO VISITED THE PLACE FOR A BANANA SPLIT OR ICE CREAM SODA.

1935: THE INCOMPARABLE "FLEXIE"

WHAT BOY IN THE 1930'S AND 40'S DIDN'T LONG FOR A FLEXIBLE FLYER SLED? IT WAS THE CADILLAC OF SLEDS. TODAY THE KIDS ARE SLIDING DOWN THE HILL ON PLASTIC "BOATS." NEVER EXPERIENCING THE JOYS OF A FLYING "BELLY FLOP."

1946: BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION AREA OF "THE BURG"

THANKS TO RUSS METZGER FOR LENDING ME A COPY OF THE 1946 TCHS YEARBOOK, "IMMACULATA." I HAVE ADDED THE IDENTIFYING TEXT. THE VERTICAL LINE DOWN THE CENTER IS THE FOLD BETWEEN THE FRONT COVER AND FIRST LEAF OF THE YEARBOOK

1971: WHO SAID THEY WEREN'T "THE GOOD OLD DAYS?"

TALK ABOUT THE HIGH COST OF LIVING! LOOK WHAT YOU COULD BUY IN THE WAY OF A NEW CAR BACK IN 1971. A SPANKING NEW MERC MONTEGO FOR LESS THAN $3,000! STEP BACK IN 1964, I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 1964 VOLKSWAGEN "BEETLE" FOR $1,776.00 FOR MY DAILY COMMUTE TO NEW BRUNSWICK.

DIGITIZED VS. MICROFILM IMAGES

AS YOU VIEW THE OFFSET PHOTOS ON THIS SITE, KEEP IN MIND THAT A QUALITY GRAPHICS SOFTWARE PROGRAM CAN REALLY RENDER AN OLD PUBLISHED NEWS PHOTO INTO A THING OF BEAUTY.

COMPARE THE FOLLOWING YARDLEY BRIDGE GRAPHIC WITH ONE FROM SCRATCHY MICROFILM AND YOU WILL SEE WHY I AM SO ENTHUSED ABOUT DIGITIZING HISTORICAL MATERIAL FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS!

1913: YARDLEY PA. THE OLD AND NEW BRIDGES

THE NEW BRIDGE REPLACES A FORMER SPAN WHICH WAS BUILT IN TIME FOR TRAVELERS TO ACCESS THE 1876 CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION IN PHILADELPHIA. THESE PHOTOS FROM AN OLD 1913 EDITION OF THE TRENTON TIMES, HAVE BEEN ENHANCED, CLEANED, AND LIGHTENED, USING CURRENT GRAPHICS TECHNOLOGY.

2008: ANOTHER TOM GLOVER WEBSITE

I HAVE JUST STARTED ANOTHER WEBSITE DEDICATED TO BOTH BROADCAST AND AMATEUR RADIO. AS WA2RVU, AN AMATEUR RADIO LICENSE HOLDER SINCE THE EARLY 1970'S I HAVE MET MANY WONDERFMPUL "HAMS" WHO HAVE MADE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON ME. MY INTEREST IN BROADCAST RADIO GOES BACK TO MY VERY EARLIEST CHILDHOOD. NOW IN MY MID 70'S MY GROWING COLLECTION OF OLD RADIO PROGRAMS ON MP3 LET ME ONCE AGAIN HEAR THE MUSIC OF GLENN MILLER, THE EXCITEMENT OF "THE SHADOW" AND "HOP HARRIGAN," AND THE WIT OF JEAN SHEPHERD, MY VERY FAVORITE SATIRIST.
CHECK OUT:
TOM GLOVER'S GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO
http://www.gloveradio.blogspot.com/

THANKS TO EUGENE BERGMANN FOR VISITING MY NEW WEBSITE, BUT MORE THANKS FOR CORRECTING MY MIS-SPELLING OF JEAN SHEPHERD. (I SPELLED HIS LAST NAME "SHEPARD.") THANKS FOR CORRECTING ME, EUGENE AND THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE.

MR. EUGENE BERGMANN WROTE:

Good to see that you will be commenting on broadcast radio and ham radio, especially on Jean Shepherd (note spelling). My book about his work, EXCELSIOR, YOU FATHEAD! THE ART AND ENIGMA OF JEAN SHEPHERD was published 3/2005.

A REMINDER

AS THIS WEBSITE HEADS TOWARD 50,000 "HITS," IT IS APPROPRIATE THAT I REPEAT A LITTLE KNOWN FEATURE OF THE SITE. IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF MY MAIN PAGE THERE IS A "SEARCH BLOG" AREA. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SPECIFIC SUBJECT, TYPE IT IN AND CLICK ON "SEARCH. EXAMPLE: TYPE IN CHAMBERSBURG AND YOU WILL BRING UP ANY AND ALL POSTS WHICH REFER TO THE BURG. 1940: ROWLEY'S BAKERY

YEAH, THEY BAKED ROLLS, BUT THEIR CREAM DONUTS WERE TO DIE FOR. I REMEMBER ROWLEY'S BAKERY. THEY WERE LOCATED ON THE CORNER OF SOUTH OLDEN AND HOBART AVENUES. JUST UP THE STREET BY THE GAIETY THEATER WAS TOWNSENDS BAKERY.

2008: HAPPY NEW YEAR AND A WORD ABOUT MY WEBSITE

A NOTE FROM TOM:
Many of the articles and news photos posted on this site are extracted from my collection of Trenton newspapers. They include the Trenton Times, the Daily State Gazette, and the Daily True American. Additionally, as an enthusiast of local history for many years, there are many clippings which were in the many scrapbooks I have collected over the years. I began manually transcribing this historical material before computers and scanners became available. Some of these papers are in very poor condition, and you will note that many of the transcribed articles have only the date and subject listed. Additionally, the photos from the early 20th century are quite primitive, and were produced before the offset/printing process was perfected.
THE 120 YEAR OLD ARTICLE ON "THE OLD BOROUGH" OF CHAMBERSBURG WHICH IS PRESENTED HEREWITH IS AN EXAMPLE OF LITTLE KNOWN LOCAL HAPPENINGS FROM OUR WONDERFUL LOCAL HISTORIC PAST.

1940: NEW JERSEY AMATEUR RADIO "ROUTE MAP"

THIS AND THE FOLLOWING SCAN ARE FROM MY "RADIO" FOLDER. RADIO AND ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY ARE OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO ME. THE GRAPHIC ABOVE ILLUSTRATES THE EFFICIENT NETWORK SET UP BY AMATEUR OPERATORS BACK IN THE EARLY 40'S AND EVEN EARLIER.

1943: AMATEUR RADIO IN HAMILTON DURING WWII

I HAVE POSTED A NUMBER OF GRAPHICS ON ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUBJECTS, AMATEUR RADIO. BACK IN THE EARLY 1970'S WHEN I OBTAINED MY WA2RVU CALL SIGN, I AND MANY OF MY FELLOW NEWCOMERS TO THE HAM FRATERNITY WERE SCORNFULLY REFERRED TO AS "APPLIANCE OPERATORS." TECHNICALLY, THE CHARGE WAS TRUE. THOSE OLD TIMERS BUILT THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT, WOUND THEIR OWN COILS AND ASSEMBLED THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT. AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE ACCOMPANYING ARTICLE, THOSE "OLD TIMERS" WERE READY, WILLING, AND QUITE ABLE TO PROVIDE THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO THE WAR EFFORT,

PARDON THE REDUNDANCY

I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A VIEWER OF THIS WEBSITE. SHE SAID I SHOULD SEND LARGER PHOTOS AND ENGRAVINGS. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH MY SITE. EVERY POST CAN BE ENLARGED BY SIMPLY CLICKING ON IT. IT WILL ENLARGE TO THE FULLEST.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL
AND THANKS FOR VISITING. I HOPE YOU STAY
WITH ME THROUGH THE NEW YEAR.

1943: CATHEDRAL H.S. GIRLS DONATE AN AVENGER!

NOW YOU KNOW WHY THEY WERE KNOWN AS "THE GREATEST GENERATION." IMAGINE RAISING ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY ONE OF THOSE FAMOUS WAR BIRDS. NOT ONLY DID CATHEDRAL DO THE GRUMMAN AVENGER THING, THEY ALSO RAISED ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY FOUR JEEPS FOR UNCLE SAM'S WWII FIGHTING MEN!
THE AVENGER WAS A TORPEDO BOMBER....I NEVER HEARD OF IT AS BEING USED AS A DIVE BOMBER, BUT HEY, WHAT DO I KNOW?

1945 WWII: TOBACCO WAS ALL THE RAGE

MANY OF THOSE GI'S IN WWII GRATEFULLY OPENED THOSE LITTLE PACKS OF 4 CIGARETTES WHICH WERE INCLUDED IN THEIR "C-RATIONS." HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SEEN A MOVIE WHERE A WOUNDED GI IS LYING ON A GURNEY TO BE SENT TO A MEDICAL FACILITY, AND A BUDDY PUTS A CIGARETTE IN HIS LIPS. CIGARETTES WERE AN IMPORTANT PART OF MANY A FIGHTING MAN. THE HEALTH RISKS WERE JUST AS DANGEROUS AS TODAY, EVEN MORESO. THE WWII CIGARETTE DIDN'T HAVE FILTERS.

1941: WWII POSTCARDS

HOW I LOVE THOSE WORLD WAR II GRAPHICS! SOME TIME AGO I FOUND A CD ONLINE WITH EXCELLENT WWII PROPAGANDA AND RECRUITING POSTERS. I WILL BRING A FEW TO THIS WEBSITE IN FUTURE POSTS.

1881: WOODWARD'S MILL THRIVING

UTTERLY FASCINATING ARTICLES! THIS IS THE TYPE OF LOCAL HISTORY WHICH I LOVE TO DISCOVER! ONE CAN ONLY CALL FORTH ONE'S IMAGINATION TO TRY TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF THE FASCINATING VILLAGES OF GROVEVILLE AND YARDVILLE AS THEY WERE IN THE YEARS GONE BY. ESPECIALLY INTERESTING IN THIS POST IS THE ALLENTOWN CONNECTION, WHEN OUR AREA COMPLETELY RURAL IN CHARACTER.

1912: WESLEY GROVE GENESIS

MY DEAR FRIEND AND FELLOW HISTORIAN, THE LATE BOB SIMPKINS, FILLED ME IN ON THE FASCINATING STORY OF WESLEY GROVE. BOB IS 102 YEARS OLD AND AS SHARP AS A TACK WHEN IT COMES TO LOCAL HAMILTON HISTORY, AND ESPECIALLY THE YARDVILLE-GROVEVILLE AREA. THIS INTERESTING ARTICLE IS FROM MY "GROVEVILLE" FOLDER.

1988: Elma Borden: A Local Legend

Elma Borden is descended from the Groveville Bordens, one of the well know old time families of the quaint town. She was a very viable historian and the author of a "vanity" press volume on the history of Groveille. As seen in the article, she was also an accomplished educator.

1988: DEL RIO: HOME OF CARL DEANGELO'S KNIGHTS OF THE ROUNDTABLE

WHAT FOND MEMORIES I HAVE OF THIS GREAT OLD HAMILTON LANDMARK! BACK WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER IN THE LATE 40'S AND EARLY 50'S, CARL DE ANGELO'S DEL RIO WAS ONE OF THE PLACES MY BUDDIES AND I STOPPED FOR A LATE NIGHT SNACK AFTER WE DROPPED OUR GIRL FRIENDS OFF AT THEIR HOMES. CARL HAD A LARGE MARBLE TOPPED ROUND TABLE WHICH HE SET ASIDE FOR US, DUBBING US THE "KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE." DEL RIO STARTED IN THE EARLY 40'S AS A WALK UP HOT DOG - HAMBURGER STAND AND EVOLVED INTO A RESTAURANT WHICH MANY OF US MISS TO THIS VERY DAY.

RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING COMMENT FROM "OMAD" FROM ST. ANTHONY GRAMMAR SCHOOL CLASS OF '49. THANKS FOR THE INPUT. MANY THANKS FOR WRITING, "OMAD":
Amazing!! This past week 13 of us who are St Anthony Grammar School grads, class of '49, (from all over now) had lunch in Trenton at the Blue Danube. Four of us traveled down Hamilton past Del Rio and I said it was always my favorite place and well remembered even though I have been out of Trenton for over 50 years. There was agreement from all that it was theirs also. Guess there really are no coincidences, because there it is in all its original glory.

1978: RIGHT ON, MAURY!

MAURY WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE COLUMNIST WHEN HE WAS WRITING FOR THE LATE, GREAT "MERCER MESSENGER (AND HAMILTON LIFE). MAURY'S INSIGHTS ON THE "SPANISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE" FARCE WAS WRITTEN ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO AS SEEN IN THE COLUMN ABOVE. AS I GO THROUGH THE PAGES OF LOCAL NEWSPAPERS DATING BACK TO THE INFLUX OF IMMIGRANTS IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, I FOUND THAT THOSE FOLKS WENT TO NIGHT SCHOOL TO LEARN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. HERE HERE!

1978: "TIMES, THEY AIN'T A-CHANGING;" THEY JUST GET WORSE!

YOU THINK MEDICARE COSTS WERE OUT OF CONTROL BACK BACK IN 1978, ASK ME OR ANY OF MY CONTEMPORARIES ABOUT THEM IN THIS YEAR OF 2007 GOING ON 2008. WE GET A PUNY 3% INCREASE IN OUR SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT, AND ALONG COMES AARP RAISING OUR MONTHLY MEDICARE COSTS MORE THAN THE PIDDLING INCREASE WE RECEIVED AS A "COLA" (COST OF LIVING) INCREASE. BY THE WAY: THE OLD CODGER IN THE CARTOON IS IN NO WAY A TYPICAL CROSS SECTION OF TODAY'S VIABLE SENIORS. I, AND WE DON'T LOOK LIKE ONE OF AL CAPP'S "L'IL ABNER" HILLBILLIES, AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, MANY OR MOST OF US DO NOT NEED A CANE TO MANEUVER ABOUT. EGAD, HOW I DETEST STEREOTYPES!

1978: REMEBERING THE 70'S

REMEMBER THOSE LEISURE SUITS AND SIDEBURNS? EGAD IN RETROSPECT THE 70'S ERA WAS A TIME OF HORRIBLE SARTORIAL TASTE! I STILL REMEMBER THAT POLYESTER FOREST GREEN LEISURE SUIT WITH LIGHTER GREEN STITCHING THAT I WORE BACK IN THE 70'S, AND ALSO THOSE SHOES WITH HIGHER THAN NORMAL HEELS. CHECK OUT YOUNG CAPTAIN FRED YAEDE IN THERE, LOOKING QUITE HANDSOME IN HIS THEN-FASHIONABLE OPEN SHIRT WITH THOSE VERY LENGTHY LAPELS.

1940: LEADING UP TO THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN

This is one of the many articles I transcribed by typewriter Prior to my acquisition of a computer, OCR software and a scanner. It was transcribed in August, 1986. It is from the Trenton Evening Times of July 19, 1940.
It is a precursor to the historic “Battle of Britain.”
====================================================

FUEHRER MAKES IT
CLEAR HOSTILITIES
CAN END ONLY
ON TERMS OF
GERMANY
________________________
PUTS BLAME ON CHURCHILL

BERLIN, July 19 (AP):
Adolf Hitler, the conqueror of France, and the controller of a continent,
Tonight offered Great Britain a last chance to withdraw from the conflict or see destruction of her world empire and terror for millions.
He spoke for an hour and thirty five minutes before the Reichstag, to offer "still another appeal; this time the last-to reason."
He did not outline the conditions for a peace that will end a conflict which, he said, it is senseless to prolong. But he made it perfectly clear that any peace must be on the terms of Germany.
He set no time limit for Britain's answer to this "last" appeal, and gave no clue to the conditions under which he might be disposed to open peace talks. In this respect his "peace appeal" was simply in appeal to the British to come to their senses and sue for peace before it is too late.
He emphasized that "I am not the vanquished, begging favors, but the victor, speaking in the name of reason." Supreme Confidence suggested Hitler's every word, every gesture suggested the most supreme confidence as he warned Prime Minister Churchill that if he insists on a fight to the finish "I prophesy destruction of a great empire, an empire it was never my intention to destroy or even harm."
With a stab of his hand Hitler swept back the lock of hair which regularly falls over his forehead, and continued: "Possibly Mr. Churchill will again brush aside this statement of mine by saying it is merely born of fear and doubt in our final victory. In that case I shall have relieved my conscience in regard to things to come. ”Hitler warned the people of Great Britain that their leaders "probably have no real conception of what it will mean, once the German offensive begins in earnest against the British Isles." Referring to Britain's air war against German munitions centers and other strategic points, Hitler said: "A short time ago Churchill began to bomb the civilian population in Germany.”
Answer to Be Terrible
"I have thus far hardly answered this bombardment. But when my answer comes it will be terrible for millions of people."Churchill should for once believe me; a great world empire then. will be destroyed. And this war will not be ended before one of the two combatants is down and out. "Churchill may think it will be we who will be down and out. But I will make a prophecy, just by way of exception: I know that destruction of England will be the end of further struggle. My conscience compels me to appeal once more to England's common sense. I am not doing that as a defeated man, but as a victor."
Briefly touching on Russo-German relations, Hitler declared, these had been "fixed once and for all by a clear delineation of spheres of interests," and that British efforts to lure Moscow into an anti-German front were not only futile but foolish. Victory in this war, Hitler also asserted, will be a victory for both Italy and Germany, and "the wrongs of both will be righted."
Italy, the Fuehrer said, had entered the war entirely of her own accord without any pressure from Germany. his action, however, had helped to make the French realize more speedily the hopelessness of further resistance. And, once Italy was in the war, Italo-German military and political cooperation was complete, "and the end of it will be a joint victory."
Arriving today from Rome, Count Galeazzo Ciano; Italian foreign minister and son-in-law of Premier Mussolini, occupied a place of honor in the front row of the diplomatic corps box. Ciano will discuss axis problems with German officials tomorrow and will catch a night train home. Says Bloodshed Unnecessary
All the bloodshed of the past 10 months could have been avoided, Hitler said, for it was not Germany who wanted war. The great aim of the Nazi movement, he explained, was simply to "strike off the shackles of Versailles;" and it would have been possible to achieve this aim peacefully. His pre-war policy in pursuit of this aim, he said, was two-fold: "Real friendship with Italy and a similar relationship with England."
At Munich, in September, 1938, it even seemed as though this peaceful revision actually would be realized, he told his uniformed audience. It was a time when, "thanks to growing common sense, it appeared as though international cooperation might lead to peaceful solution of the remaining problems. But the agreement to this end, signed in Munich on September 29, 1938, by the four leading interested States, was not only not welcomed in London and Paris but was actually condemned as a sign of abominable "weakness."
The Munich agreement was condemned and sabotaged, he went on, because peaceful revision threatened to upset the plans of "Jewish capitalist war-mongers, free-Masons, armament manufacturers and war profiteers, international business men, and Stock Exchange jugglers."
And so it came about that Poland was "pushed into war" and the peace offer Germany made after conclusion of the Polish campaign denounced as "cowardly."
Hits British Troops
In the subsequent Norwegian campaign, which he explained was necessary because of an Allied attempt to hit at Germany through Scandinavia, German soldiers met “very brave" resistance from Norwegians troops. But the British there, he continued, were poorly trained, badly equipped and "definitely inferior in every respect."
Turning to the great westward push through Holland, Belgium and France, Hitler disclosed that the capture of Paris was not in the original plan of campaign, but after Paris was taken, encirclement tactics made possible the rushing of organized French military resistance and left Marshal Henri Petain no choice but to sue for peace.
In asserting there was "no real round for prolongation of the war," Hitler confessed he felt only "disgust" at the prospect of a fight to the finish. But "from Britain I now hear only a single cry; not from the people but from the politicians that the war must go on. In neither this world nor the next," he exclaimed bitterly, "can (Prime Minister) Churchill and Reynaud (former French Premier) answer for the suffering they have brought upon their people.”
Hitler said German losses, "from the polar regions to the Spanish border, were extraordinarily small. We are prepared for much greater losses," said Hitler. “The men saved now are available to carry on the fight for freedom." At the moment many of our divisions are returning from France. Many are on leave. Weapons and equipment are being repaired or being replaced by new. The loss of weapons in Norway and especially in Holland, Belgium and France was extremely insignificant, and in no proportion to the results achieved. The army and air force are stronger than they were at the beginning of the action in the West. War materials are being produced in such quantities that in some departments it actually is necessary to slow down manufacture because of a lack of storage facilities. Thanks to the four-year plan, Germany is prepared to assume the heaviest burdens. We possess today the two most important raw materials: coal and iron in, I dare say, unlimited quantities."
Reviewing the latest revelations in the German white book, Hitler said "Churchill will not be able to lie away" messages allegedly exchanged by French Generalissimo Maxim Weygand, former French Premier Daladier and others in connection with the alleged planned northern campaign of the Allies. He charged the "misuse" of Scandinavian lands by the western powers was particularly obvious."
The Fuehrer said German measures anticipating the English and French occupation of Norway constituted "one of the boldest strokes of German arms,"
Even while the Norwegian campaign still was under way, he said reports became "more and more threatening."
Says Allies Make Task Easy
"On the French-Belgian border a great concentration of French troops took place with the obvious purpose of striking a lightning blow at Germany over Belgian territory," he declared. But, Hitler asserted, the enemy actually made the German task easy by the vast concentration of western forces in a limited area. "I saw there the necessity of two military actions," he went on. "First, the smashing of mechanized forces on our right wing; second, reaching the sea:"
Hitler went back to his original aims.
"Since establishment of the National Socialist regime its foreign policy has had two objectives he told the Reichstag.
"First, true friendship with Italy; second, the establishment of similar relations to England. I have published these thoughts and defended them in countless speeches. I am still sad today that despite all my efforts it hasn't been possible to achieve that friendship with England which 1 believe would have been a blessing for both peoples,
"But I am happy the first part of the foreign policy has been realized. I am thankful first of all to the genius who stands today at the head of the Italian people. Only due to him has it been possible to bring together the two revolutions which have so much in common, and now finally by a common flowing of blood to seal the bond which is destined to bring Europe together in a new life."
Declares Italy Great Aid
Hitler said Italy's attitude had been a great aid to Germany. "From the beginning Italy took from our enemies the freedom of strategy;" he declared, "It entered the war on its own free decision.
Our gratitude must, therefore, be so much greater. Our cooperation in political and military fields is complete. At the end stands common victory."
Throughout Hitler's speech ran a high note of personal praise for the armed forces and the German people; capped by the announcement that Field Marshal Hermann Wilhelm Goering has been elevated to the position of Reich's marshal of Greater Germany In addition, may now wear the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross. Colonel General_ Wa1ther Brauchitsch, the army commander in-chief, and Colonel General Karl Rudolf Gerd von Runstedt,
Commander-in-chief in Poland, were made field marshal generals, and other generals were promoted field marshal.
Goering closed the Reichstag session after the singing Deutschland Ueber Alles and the Horst Vessel song.
"Never before has there beet such a session," the newly-pro, noted marshal general said. "You my Fuehrer, again and again stirred the German people up. To the world you even gave prophesies of vast magnitude,
"Today nobody can deny all your prophesies had usual fulfillment."

WHEN I LOST MY COMPLETE COMPUTER HARD DRIVE A FEW MONTHS AGO, I LOST THE EMAIL ADDRESS OF THE SENDER AND AS A RESULT, I HAVE NO PHOTOS OF LOVELY LUCY AND HER EQUALLY LOVELY FEMALE DAREDEVILS.

HOME OF THE FIRST CHRISTMAS TREE FARM?

A WEEK OR SO AGO, I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM A COLUMNIST FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES ASKING IF I COULD ASSIST HIM IN VERIFYING THE STORY THAT CHRISTMAS TREE FARNS HAD ORIGINATED HERE IN WHITE HORSE, HAMILTON TOWNSHIP. THE GRAPHIC TELLS THE STORY OF BILL MCGALLIARD'S SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT IN CULTIVATING CHRISTMAS TREES ON HIS WHITE HORSE PROPERTY.

1989: HANUKKAH IN HAMILTON

HERE WE HAVE SAMANTHA AND JOSH DITTRICH LIGHTING THE MENORAH IN THE CONCLUDING HOURS OF HANUKKAH, 1989. HERE'S WISHING A HAPPY HANUKKAH, KWANZA, RAMADAN, AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL WHO FOLLOW THOSE FAITHS.

1928: TRENTON CHRISTMAS PAST

HOW I MISS THOSE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TRIPS "UPTOWN" DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASONS OF MY YOUTH! GOLDBERG'S, KRESGE'S. WOOLWORTHS, SWERN'S, STOPPING TO ADMIRE THE BEAUTIFUL BLUE MIRRORED WALLS AT THE MAYFAIR THEATER! MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS.

1940: THE GERMAN AMERICAN BUND UNDER FIRE

THE BUND WAS GETTING QUITE MILITANT BACK IN THE LATE 30'S AND EARLY 40'S, RIGHT UP TO THE ADVENT OF WWII IN 1939. THERE WERE NUMEROUS GERMAN-AMERICAN CITIZENS WHO WERE WERE PRO GERMANY.

1921: WAS DEUTZVILLE AN ORPHAN?

BACK IN 1921 THE RESIDENTS OF DEUTZVILLE, BORDERING TRENTON (AS DOES BROMLEY AND BROAD STREET PARK) ACCUSED THE TOWN FATHERS OF NEGLEGET OF SERVICES. MANY DEUTZVILLE CITIZENS FELT THE THE MORE AFFLUENT HAMILTON NEIGHBORHOODS WERE GETTING MORE ATTENTION. THE RESIDENTS WERE UP IN ARMS AS CAN BE SEEN IN THIS ARTICLE.

1940: WOMENS' CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION

THIS TEMPERANCE GROUP WAS PROMINENT FROM THE 1800'S UP TO THE MID 1940'S. THIS ARTICLE ON THE YARDVILLE-GROVEVILLE AREA CONTAINS SOME OF THE MOST PROMINENT FAMILIES FROM THOSE TWO COMMUNITIES. ...TANTUM, MARTIN, MOUNT...WELL SEE FOR YOURSELF!
