1945: The Csorgo's: WWII Heroes of "The Greatest Generation"

In the last half of the 20th century and here in the 21st century, Memorial Day has become just another day off to many citizens; a weekend off to enjoy the beach, or perhaps an outdoor cookout. Our Veterans have given their all for our country. Too many made the supreme sacrifice and should be given at least a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made by these true American heroes.

1945: My Next Door Neighbor Ed Willever

Imagine my surprise when I ran across a near and dear friend of mine over the past 45 years. My next door neighbor, the late Ed "Ned" Willever. Ned was another of those members of the "Greatest Generation" who never discussed his WWII exploits. It was only a number of years after getting to know him that I learned that he was a Purple Heart Veteran.

1945: The Simpson Brothers in WWII

As a Memorial Day tribute, I will be posting selected post of Veterans whose names are familiar to me. Unfortunately, there are literally houndreds of local Vets in my newspapers, and it is quite impossible to include all. Three members of the Simpson family served on active duty during the war.

1945: Six Angelucci's in the Military Service

Just around the corner from my Hartley Avenue home and just across the street from the very old blacksmith shop which once sat at the corner of Newkirk Avenue and So. Olden Avenue, a branch of the Angelucci family resided. "Trenton Mineral Flooring" was a very familiar business back during my early teen and pre teen years. In later years, it was my privilege to meet Len Angelucci, but I never met the others illustrated in this graphic, nor did I realize the Angelucci families made such an incredible contribution to our country during World War II.

1945: An Early Jet Flies Over Trenton

I found this to be very interesting photo of a very early U.S. Air Force jet fighter. I had never heard of a "P-59." My knowledge of "Pursuit" (The "P" in the planes' Identification), terminated with my very favorite WWII aircraft, the P51 Mustang.

SUNDAY EVENING KUSER GAZEBO CONCERTS

DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THAT SIGN. THE RESTORATION IS COMPLETE. THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN THE FALL OF 2006 AT HAMILTON'S FALL HARVEST FEST.

Bing Crosby, Patti Page, Perry Como, Mario Lanza, Joni James, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Eddie Fisher, Glenn Miller,..........

I will be hosting the Sunday evening “gazebo concerts” at Kuser Farm Park throughout the summer of 2007. Each Sunday from July 8th through August 26th, from 6 to 7:30 or 8 P.M., we will bring a nostalgic evening of music under the stars. Each week will feature an hour and a half or two of classic love ballads, country music, Irving Berlin classics, “Tin Pan Alley” favorites, Broadway tunes, music of World War II, the 40’s, the 50’s, and even some of the smooth and understandable songs of the 60’s and 70's. Sing along or just listen and enjoy! For those dancers in our midst, that great little concrete dance floor in front of the gazebo welcomes you when we roll out the barrel with polkas, jitter bugs, line dancing, and good old fashioned cheek to cheek dancing. The media has decided that our music doesn’t fit their target audience. Viewers of this website and my "Sentimental Journey" columns in the Trenton TIMES ARE my target audience! The programs are free of charge. Bring a folding chair or a blanket and settle back and remember the music we grew up with.....indeed the era when music was music! I look forward to seeing many of you beginning on Sunday, July 8th.

There will be no rain dates.

STAY TUNED...More information will be forthcoming.

1940: The Late, Lamented James Moses School

Only old time area residents will remember the old James Moses School which was once located on Park Avenue in the Villa Park area. My cousin was a studet there back in the 1930's.

1923: Bromley Woman Survived the Titanic Disaster

How very interesting that a lady whose home was less than 4 or 5 blocks from my Atlantic Avenue home was one of the survivors of the Titanic disaster of April 1912! One of the very rewarding aspects of historical research is uncovering these gems which few of us know about.
Digitizing these historical articles lends credibility to the slogan on my office door at the Hamilton Library's Local History Collection:

" Indexing local history one page at a time!"

1937: Womens' Christian Temperance Union

Here are the two winners of the contest held by the WCTU. The Stackhouse name is legendary in the Groveville area. I would bet that a Groveville or Yardville old timer will recognize these two winners, and also some of the names in the caption.

1944: "L-9" Liberty Street ; A Busload of Memories

I drew this pen and ink sketch back in the 1980's to illustrate a story in "The Way We Were," a column I wrote for the late, lamented Mercer Messenger. That bus was the source of many pleasant memories for me. Mom Glover and I made many visits to downtown Trenton before the shopping malls and the desertion from downtown caused by societal changes and the loss of business. The "L-9" in this view is at the corner of Liberty Street and South Olden Avenue, heading back to Cedar Lane and the end of the line. "Steve's Barber Shop" is seen in the engraving, next to "Carty's" luncheonette. Remember them? The "L-9" started its daily runs from the end of the line at Cedar Lane and Olden, some 3 blocks from my Hartley Avenue home. Her journey to downtown Trenton took her along South Olden Avenue to Liberth Street, left on Liberty Street to South Broad Street, then through State and Broad Streets to the old Perry Street Terminal, and retracing her route back to Cedar Lane and Olden.

1923: GROVEVILLE HONORS THE VETERANS

I OFTEN WONDER IF THE RESIDENTS OF HAMILTON REALIZE THE MAGNIFICENT HISTORICAL HERITAGE WE FIND IN THE TOWNSHIP OF HAMILTON. GROVEVILLE IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE "VILLAGES" WHICH CONTAIN A FASCINATING WEALTH OF HISTORY. GROVEVILLE ALWAYS REMINDED ME OF THE STEREOTYPICAL 19TH CENTURY NEW ENGLAND TEXTILE TOWN. GROVEVILLE WAS ALSO A TEXTILE TOWN WITH THE MORRIS MILLS BEING THE LEADING PROVIDER OF EMPLOYMENT FOR THE TOWN WORKERS. THE McELMOYL FAMILY ALSO CONDUCTED A BUSINESS OF WOVEN CANVAS DUCK BAGS FOR CARRYING COAL AND OTHER RURAL USEAGE. IN ONE OF MY FORMER POSTS ON THIS SITE, I REPRODUCED A GRAPHIC OF THE VARIOUS BAGS AVAILABLE. GO TO THE UPPER LEFT OF THIS SCREEN AND IN THE "SEARCH BLOG" SPACE, KEY IN CANVAS AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIND IT. THE POST YOU ARE NOW VIEWING WILL APPEAR FIRST, (BECAUSE IT CONTAINS THE WORD "CANVAS".) ARROW DOWN TO THE NEXT OCCURRANCE AND VIEW THE GRAPHIC. CLICK ON THE GRAPHIC ONCE FOR ENLARGING, CLICK A SECOND TIME TO SEE THE MAXIMUM SIZE.
AS AN INTERESTING ASIDE, DID YOU KNOW THAT GROVEVILLE WAS ALSO HOME TO A MINCE MEAT PRODUCING ENTITY. THE BORDEN FAMILY HAD A THRIVING BUSINESS THERE MANY YEARS AGO.

1956: SEE THE POST BELOW. I.D. NEEDED

HERE'S A PHOTO OF THE BUFFET TABLE AT THE 50TH REUNION OF THE CLASS OF '56. AS INDICATED IN THE PRECEEDING POST.

SOMEONE PLEASE IDENTIFY THE HORNETS IN THIS PHOTO.

1956: 50th Reunion

FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS I HAVE BEEN TOUTING MY HHS CLASS OF '51 AS "THE CLASS WITH CLASS." WELL FOLKS, I'M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT ANOTHER CLASS HAS THAT SAME DISTINCTION: THE CLASS OF 1956; ANOTHER "CLASS WITH CLASS!" THIS MORNING AS I WENT TO MY OFFICE AT HAMILTON LIBRARY'S LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION, I FOUND A SET OF 2 CD'S FROM SKIP KONTURA WITH INCREDIBLE PHOTOS OF THE 50TH REUNION OF THE CLASS WHICH WAS HELD LAST YEAR. THESE FOLKS WENT ALL OUT TO BRING BACK THE 50'S GENERATION. JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THAT LOVELY LASS PLAYING THE PINBALL MACHINE! THEY EVEN SHOWCASED A '57 CHEVY BELAIRE, AND A '53 PONTIAC SEDAN. I WILL BE POSTING MUCH MORE IN FUTURE POSTS.
THE FOLLOWING FROM JACK LACY, HHS '56, IN RESPONSE TO MY REQUEST TO IDENTIFY THE SUBJECTS IN THE MANY PHOTOS FORWARDED TO ME VIA SKIP KONTURA:
Tom...
Thanks so much for your efforts ! The first photo (NOTE: THE PHOTO ABOVE)you've posted is of Skip's wife, Pat, at the working 50's era pinball machine we rented for the Friday Night Canteen.
BTW, if you are of a mind to add a credit line, the Friday Night photos were taken by my former campaign photographer, Larry Krakowitch, who did so gratis.
I'm going to print out your blog message and present it tonight at the HHS56 Reunion Committee meeting so that anyone can copy down the blog address. We have a one-night 51st Reunion coming on June 9. The theme this year is "Carnivals-Circuses-State Fairs" and we've been gathering memorabilia from the Hamid Family and others to put on display that night.
