1934: THE PARKWAY AVENUE TUNNEL

How often I have passed under that tunnel! Judy worked for the Childrens' Home Society back in the 1950's, and I was a regular visitor to that area, along with my numerous trips to Cadwalader Park to metal detect looking for old coins. It is difficult for me to imagine the area before the construction of the tunnel.

Hi Tom: I lived two blocks from the tunnel on Carteret Avenue. We walked through it to the lower entrance to Cadwalader Park. I too cannot imagine what the area looked like before it was built. My grandparents, Emilie and David S. Hutchinson moved into the new house on Carteret in 1900. I wonder what it looked like on Parkside then? Regards

Tom,

Love the picture, as I would pass under this bridge on my way to school at Joseph Stokes Memorial School at Parkside and Homan Aves. Just to clarify, this is not the bridge/tunnel on Parkside Ave next to Edgewood Ave. The wing wall on that tunnel is concave, while this one is convex. Also, that one has columns, while this one does not. Once again, great pic.

Tom,
Fascinating photo. I was fooled too, thinking it was the park entrance tunnel, until I read Jay's comment. We lived on the 900 block of Edgewood and would pass through both tunnels - the one under the feeder canal at the end of our street and the one under the railroad tracks near Homan Ave - when we went to my grandmother's house on Hillcrest.

Thanks for all the great items on your site!
