Hey, who knows? Were we to see across the street to the sidewalk in front of Goldberg's Department Store, one might see a young Tommy Glover walking with his mom to Goldberg's. Little Tommy was interested in the great "Toyland" at Goldberg's while mom was heading to the "Notions" counter for a stock of khaki wool for a sweater she was knitting for her eldest son Len who was over in England with the 8th Air Force. If I'm not mistaken that New Jersey Floor Covering sign was located on the site of the destructive fire that leveled their facility circa 1946 or 7.

1940's: SOUTH BROAD AT GOLDBERG'S
Hey, who knows? Were we to see across the street to the sidewalk in front of Goldberg's Department Store, one might see a young Tommy Glover walking with his mom to Goldberg's. HI TOM....I BELIEVE NEW JERSEY FLOOR COVERING WAS LOCATED ON NORTH BROAD AND HANOVER ST. WHEN IT CAUGHT FIRE. MY GOOD FRIEND, PAT DeGEORGE, WORKED FOR THEM BEFORE THEY ACQUIRED THE GONDOLA ON FRANKLIN AND ROEBLING AVE. REGARDS.

Freedies on Division, and Roebling later became "la Gondola" under the young kid Angelo Polizzi??

YEAH MIKE, IT WAS THE ELDORADO THAT THE DeGEORGES BOUGHT. PAT AND HIS MOTHER DID A FINE JOB IN THE KITCHEN THERE. THANKS FOR THE CORRECTION MIKE.
ReplyDeleteHi Tom, My recollection, is that New Jersey Floor Covering was located on South Broad St, when it caught fire. The big fire at North Broad and Hanover, during the 1940s, was a Jewelry Store. Need help with the name? It was a big night time fire, and the Trenton Fire Dept. searchlight truck lit up the area , as the firemen tried to bring it under control. There is a terrific photo of this fire in the Trentoniana Collection at the Trenton Library. The Trenton Floor Covering fire was quite spectacular. What I remember about it ( I was a young kid at the time), was the Trenton Fire Department canteen truck, handing out coffee and snacks to the firemen. Best regards rayfromvillapark
