1939: (CIRCA 1939) STACY PARK

WOW! ISN'T THAT GORGEOUS? YOU ARE A CERTIFIED OLD TIMER IF YOU REMEMBER TRENTON'S BEAUTIFUL STACY PARK. I HEARD THAT IT WAS A DUMPING GROUND A HUNDRED OR MORE YEARS AGO.

HAPPY LOVES "DQ"

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN BOYS AND GIRLS, MEET "HAPPY." SHE IS A BLUE EYED BEAUTY WHO DOESN'T KNOW SHE IS A CANINE. HAPPY IS A SILVER AND WHITE "MALAMUTE." THE "MUTE" IN HER BREED NAME MEANS SHE DOESN'T BARK. SOMETIMES I THINK SHE TALKS TO ME, BUT I CAN'T HEAR HER....SHE TALKS WITH HER BIG BLUE EYES. HERE SHE IS PARTAKING OF A DAIRY QUEEN BLACK AND WHITE SHAKE.

MY BOYHOOD HERO!

ALL RIGHT YOU GUYS....ADMIT IT. WHILE THE GIRLS WERE READING NANCY DREW AND OTHER GIRL STUFF YOU HAD A FAVORITE COMIC BOOK CHARACTER. MINE WAS CAPTAIN AMERICA AND
THE GREEN LANTERN. THE COMIC BOOK IN THE GRAPHIC IS FROM THE "GOLDEN AGE" AND WORTH A FORTUNE TODAY.

NOTE THAT THERE WERE 60 PAGES FOR A DIME. TODAY'S VERSIONS ARE A SAD SUBSTITUTE. FAR LESS PAGES AND FAR MORE COST.

1934: WILKES AND BAYARD G.A.R. GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC PART 1

ANYONE INVOLVED IN LOCAL HISTORY HAS
COME ACROSS THE STORIED AARON WILKES G.A.R. OF TRENTON. THIS IS A VERY SCARCE FEATURE FROM THE TRENTON SUNDAY TIMES ADVERTISER, 1934. PART 2 IS IN THE FOLLOWING POST.

TOM'S NOTE:
THE SIZE OF THIS PAGE PRECLUDES SCANNING AT A SETTING WHICH WILL RESULT IN LARGER PRINT. AS A RESULT, YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO READ THIS ARTICLE IF YOUR MONITOR IS HIGH RESOLUTION. FORTUNATELY THE NEXT PAGE IS SMALLER AND VERY LEGIBLE.

MYSTERY BUILDING

COULD THIS BE A SCHOOL HOUSE FROM THE EARLY TO MID 1800's? IT WAS STILL ANOTHER UNIDENTIFIED GLASS SLIDE WHICH WAS INCLUDED WITH SLIDES RELATING TO THE BROAD STREET PARK - PEARSONVILLE AREA. THERE IS LITTLE
KNOWN ABOUT HAMILTON'S EARLIEST ONE ROOM SCHOOL HOUSES. COULD THIS BE AN EARLY "WILLEY" SCHOOL? "ROWAN?" "RUSLING?" 'TIS A PUZZLEMENT.

PEARSONVILLE RELATED

SOME HISTORIC MATERIAL PRESENTS A REAL PROBLEM WHEN THERE IS JUST ENOUGH WRITTEN INTELLIGENCE TO INVITE SPECULATION. AS INDICATED IN THE CAPTION, THIS GRAPHIC STARTED OUT AS A GLASS NEGATIVE,. THE ELECTRIC LINES AND POLES IN THE BACKGROUND LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE PHOTO IS FROM THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

1943: HOLY ANGELS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

HERE THEY ARE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE "RECEPTION GRADE," FIRST AND SECOND GRADES IN 1943 FROM HAMILTON'S VENERABLE HOLY ANGELS PAR

ISH.

2007: BACK TO GRAMMAR SCHOOL WITH TOM GLOVER

WITH THE IMPRESSIVE NUMBER OF HITS ON MY HHS WEB SITE, I WOULD ASSUME THAT AT LEAST OR 2 OR 3 OR MAYBE EVEN 4 FUGITIVES FROM GRAMMAR SCHOOL DAYS OF THE 30'S 40'S AND 50'S WOULD FIND THIS PROGRAM OF INTEREST. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO BE A KUSER SCHOOL KID TO REMEMBER LIFE AT KLOCKNER, MERCERVILLE, YARDVILLE, HAMILTON SQUARE, OR EVEN FARMINGDALE AND MAPLE SHADE TO APPRECIATE THE LIFE AND TIMES WE EXPERIENCED BACK BEFORE THE ADVENT OF THE COMPUTER, COPS IN SCHOOL, ETC. COME ON OUT AND ENJOY A HAPPY 2 HOURS OF REMEMBERING OUR "DEAR OLD GOLDEN RULE DAYS!" WE'LL REMEMBER DICK AND JANE, MULTIPLICATION TABLES, DIAGRAMMING SENTENCES, STAYING AFTER SCHOOL FOR CHEWING GUM IN CLASS, NO COMPUTERS, NO TYPEWRITERS, NOTHING BUT PAPER, PENCILS AND STRAIGHT PENS, RECEPTIVE STUDENTS AND DEDICATED TEACHERS.....WE'LL RECALL THEM ALL IN THIS INTERESTING PROGRAM WHICH I WILL BE PRESENTING AT KUSER MANSION. I HOPE TO SEE AT LEAST A FEW OF MY VIEWERS THERE!

2007: JESSE ANDERSON 1933-2007

I JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM JESS ANDERSON'S' WIFE GAIL . JESS PASSED AWAY THIS AFTERNOON. I COUNTED JESS AMONG MY BEST FRIENDS. WE WENT FROM MISS MARY KELLY'S RECEPTION GRADE BACK IN 1939 RIGHT THROUGH KUSER GRAMMAR SCHOOL AND HAMILTON HIGH CLASS OF 1951. JESS HAD A VERY DISTINGUISHED CAREER. HE WAS THE TOWN'S CHIEF OF POLICE, AND LATER BECAME THE MAYOR OF SEASIDE PARK. YOU WILL BE MISSED, JESS, AND YOU WILL BE IN MY PRAYERS. MAY THE LORD WELCOME YOU INTO HIS HEAVENLY KINGDOM.
WE'LL MEET AGAIN.

1929: MERCER AIRPORT GROWS UP

I HAVE A NUMBER OF FILES (STILL TO BE RETRIEVED AND SORTED) DEALING WITH THE EARLY YEARS OF MERCER AIRPORT. THERE IS AN AERIAL VIEW WHICH IS OF GREAT INTEREST WHEN COMPARED TO THE EXPANDED MERCER AIRPORT OF TODAY. THEY WILL BE POSTED WHEN I UNCOVER THEM.

1992: A VALIANT HHSW ALUMNI EFFORT CRASHED

WE PLANNED A PICNIC ---
BUT NOBODY CAME!
BACK IN 1992, I JOINED CAROL BENCIVENGO, LORRAINE MAY, MANNY BUTERA, AND A NUMBER OF HAMILTON ALUMNI IN A VALIANT EFFORT TO ORGANIZE A HAMILTON WEST ALUMNI ASSOCIATION.
DO YOU SEE THOSE ORANGE MEMBERSHIP CARDS IN THE GRAPHIC? THERE ARE TWO BOXES OF 500 EACH WHICH WERE NEVER TOUCHED! WE EVEN INSTITUTED A NEWSLETTER, "ALUMNI CRITERION." THE RESPONSE WAS UNDERWHELMING! LAST WEEK, LORRAINE FEEHAN MAY DROPPED OFF TWO HUGE BOXES OF THE MEMBERSHIP CARDS WE WERE SURE WOULD BE EAGERLY CLAIMED BY HAMILTON HORNETS. TO ADD TO THE HURT, MUCH TIME WAS SPENT AT OUR MEETINGS ESTABLISHING BYLAWS. ALL THAT MATERIAL IS BEING STORED IN MY OFFICE SHOULD THERE BE ANY ALUMNUS OR ALUMNI THAT WOULD LIKE TO RESUME THE QUEST. I WAS COMPLETELY BAFFLED BY THE LACK OF INTEREST IN THIS WORTHWHILE ENDEAVOR.

2007: TRENTON AREA EATERIES updated

AN ADDITION TO THE REVISED LIST:
From Candy Muccioli, August 10, 2009:
Enjoy your Blog, Please Add Cent'Anni Restaurant. Was located on the corner of Genesee and Anderson Streets, Owner Felix Muccioli. Thank you, Candy! How could we have forgotten "Count Felix!"

I RECEIVED THIS EMAIL FROM JOE BATTISTE. I CAN'T BELIEVE WE LEFT PETE'S STEAK HOUSE OUT OF THE LIST! IT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SPOTS TO TAKE A DATE AFTER A MOVIE. WE DID LIST THE MARROE INN. THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP, JOE.
HERE'S JOE'S EMAIL, RECEIVED TODAY, JULY 29, 2008:
==============================
Tom: Did I miss the Marroe Inn in Lawrenceville or Pete's Streaks originally in Chambersburg then on Chambers Street and finally his son opened again in Mercerville, and then on Hudson and Elmer. Now he took over the Old Monte'sBar.
Joe Battiste
======================================
THIS FROM DAN SEEFELT ADDING "THE DONKEY PLACE" TO OUR LIST OF EATERIES. I CAN'T SAY I EVER REMEMBER THE PLACE. THANKS DAN!
===========================================
DAN WROTE
Great site!
Do any of you guys remember a restaurant on the corner of Flock and Quakerbridge Rd? I have it in my brain that it was called the Donkey Place because there was a donkey or pony there. I think my dad used to take me there to get pork roll. This was in the 60's, I think. Or am I dreaming.....Hey Tom,I just posted underTrenton area eateries updated. Do you remember theDonkey Place? Thanks,Dan Seefelt
==================================
A REVISED LIST
A NUMBER OF VIEWERS ADDED A FEW NAMES. GARY LIPPINCOTT, CANDY JENS, ALAN WILDBLOOD REQUESTED THAT THE MIS-SPELLED WORDS BE CORRECTED AND THEY WERE. THANKS TO THOSE WHO RESPONDED.
THIS EMAIL FROM BOB HARRIS, HOST OF WBCB-AM RADIO'S REMOTE BROADCAST FROM ROSSI'S TAVERN AND RESTAURANT ON SEPTMEBER 10, 2007. IF THERE ARE ANY WE MISSED, PLEASE EMAIL ME AND THEY WILL BE ADDED.

1891: THE FLOATING BATHING SUIT

THE IDEA NEVER CAUGHT ON! I WONDER WHY? THIS VICTORIAN ERA AD BY TRENTON'S R.A. DONNELLY ADVERTISES "THE SIMPLEST, MOST PRACTICAL MOST EFFECTIVE LIFE SUIT EVER INVENTED."

1946: NEDICK'S BREAKFAST

TODAY I SPENT AN ALL TOO SHORT HOUR AT THE WBCB (1490 AM) MICROPHONES IN AN INTERVIEW PROGRAM WITH HOST BOB HARRIS, GEORGE O'GORMAN, AND MIKE ROSSI FROM ROSSI'S FAMOUS BAR AND RESTAURANT. MIKE RELATED THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF ROSSI'S, WHICH IS THE OLDEST LIQUOR LICENSE HOLDERS IN TRENTON. WE HAD A WONDERFUL HOUR FULL OF NOSTALGIC GEMS. ONE OF THE SUBJECTS WAS RECALLING THE RESTAURANTS AND OTHER EATING PLACES IN AND AROUND TRENTON. THE NAMES JUST KEPT ON COMING! I HAD FORGOTTEN QUITE A FEW OF THEM AND BOB HARRIS PROMISED TO SEND THE LONG LIST OF NAMES FOR ME TO POST ON THIS SITE.
HEY BOB AND GEORGE:
WE FORGOT NEDICK'S AT STATE AND BROAD. NOTICE THE "NO TIPPING" ADMONITION. TWO DONUTS AND A FROSTY GLASS OF NEDICK'S
ORANGE DRINK FOR A DIME! HOW WOULD ONE LEAVE A TIP FOR A BREAKFAST THAT SET ONE BACK ONE THIN DIME?
THE NEDICK'S GRAPHIC WAS A SMALL TRENTON TIMES ONE COLUMN WIDE BLACK AND WHITE AD. THROUGH THE MAGIC OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS, I ADDED A BIT OF "ZING" SO AS TO HELP OLD TIME TRENTON AREA RESIDENTS TO RECALL ONE OF TRENTON'S VERY POPULAR CENTER CITY EATERIES.

1886: THE ROBBINS FAMILY

YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS AN ON THE ROAD SALESMAN, I STOPPED IN THE RURAL TOWN OF CLARKSBURG AND STUMBLED UPON THIS VERY INTERESTING BURIAL SITE. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE ROBBINS FAMILY REFERRED TO WAS CONNECTED WITH THE PROMINENT HAMILTON SQUARE ROBBINS FAMILY. OF. PARTICULAR INTEREST IS THE "LINCON" GRAVE SITE. READ ON

1885: MERCER CEMETERY THIS IS A FASCINATING CLIP!

"MUSINGS AMONG THE DEAD:" IT SEEMS SO MAUDLIN, BUT IN REALITY IT IS A REALLY INTERESTING READ. THE TOM GLOVER COLLECTION RUNS THE GAMUT FROM A TO Z, AND THIS ONE COMES UNDER THE FOLDER HEADING, "C" CEMETERIES.
TOM'S NOTE:
THE "CALOMEL" REFERRED TO WAS A COMMON MERCURY DERIVITIVE WHICH 19TH CENTURY PHYSICIANS USED TO TREAT MALARIA AND SMALL POX.

1930: BILLY DWYER IN BYGONE DAYS!

THAT LITTLE FELLOW IN THE SECOND ROW, 4TH FROM LEFT IS NOTED HISTORIAN BILL DWYER WHO TOOK OVER HARRY PODMORE'S "TRENTON IN BYGONE DAYS." THE BYGONE DAYS COLUMN WAS STARTED BY ANOTHER HISTORIC LEGEND, MR. JOHN CLEARY. BILL WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED TENNIS PLAYER.
I ADDED THE CIRCULAR PHOTO IN THE UPPER RIGHT OF THE GRAPHIC AND PUT IT IN A CIRCULAR FRAME.

1908: THE HISTORIC CROSSWICKS OAK

PERHAPS A VIEWER CAN TELL ME IF THIS TREE HAS SURVIVED THE YEARS. IT (OR WAS) A TRULY HISTORIC TREASURE.

TESTING FIRE EQUPMENT AT GROPP'S LAKE

HERE'S A GREAT OLD NEWS PHOTO OF THE VINTAGE FIRE ENGINES ALONG WITH A GROUP PHOTO OF THE LOCAL FIRE "LADDIES."*
*FIREMEN WERE REFERRED TO AS FIRE LADDIES IN THE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

ONCE AGAIN, A TIP FROM TOM

IMPORTANT: THE SEARCH BLOG FEATURE
ONLY APPEARS ON MY MAIN PAGE,
ABOVE AND TO THE LEFT.
THERE IS WHAT I SUSPECT TO BE A LITTLE KNOWN FEATURE OF THIS SITE. IT IS THE SEARCH FUNCTION.
AT THE TOP LEFT OF THE SCREEN YOU WILL SEE A WHITE BOX WITH "SEARCH BLOG" NEXT TO IT.
THIS IS A TIMESAVER. EXAMPLE: SUPPOSE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW ALL THE POSTS WHICH I HAVE BEEN POSTING SINCE 2005 ON THAT SUBJECT. GO TO THAT SEARCH BLOCK IN THE UPPER LEFT AND KEY IN BAPTIST. YOU WILL RECEIVE ALL BAPTIST REFERENCES. KEY IN CENTRAL BAPTIST AND YOU SHOULD FIND ALL OF THE CENTRAL BAPTIST POSTS. CONVERSELY, IF YOU KEY IN BAPTIST, YOU WILL BRING UP ALL BAPTIST CHURCHES AND ALL THINGS BAPTIST!
NOTE THE SUBTLE DIFFERENCE IN THE KEY WORDS.
HAPPY HUNTING!

CIRCA 1950'S KUSER CHORUS

IF ANY VIEWERS OF MY SITE CAN DATE THIS PHOTO IT WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED. THE ONLY PERSON I RECOGNIZE IN THE PHOTO IS IN THE SECOND ROW, THIRD FROM LEFT, PRETTY ELAINE SYPNIEWSKI. THIS WOULD DATE THE PHOTO AS THE EARLY 50'S, AND I SUSPECT 1953, 54 OR 55. I RECOGNIZE MANY OF THE GIRLS' FACES, BUT CAN'T RECALL THEIR NAMES. I THINK I SEE GLADYS JARVIS, AND A GAL WHOSE LAST NAME WAS BRAKER..

1943: WOMEN OF "THE GREATEST GENERATION"

WE OFTEN HEAR ABOUT THE MEN WHO SERVED AND SACRIFICED DURING WORLD WAR II. SELDOM IS ANY RECOGNITION GIVEN TO THE COUNTLESS SACRIFICES WHICH WERE MADE BY OUR WOMEN. THIS IS A LIST OF ONLY LOCAL LADIES WHO SERVED IN THE WAAC, WAVES, WASP AND SPARS DURING WWWII. FURTHERMORE, THERE WERE MANY MORE ADDED TO THE IST AS THE WAR PROGRESSED. PERHAPS A RELATIVE OF YOURS IS IN THE LIST TO THE LEFT. "SEMPER FI" LADIES!

1903: TRENTON ENTERS THE 20TH CENTURY

THE NEED FOR HIGHER WATER PRESSURE WAS NUMBER ONE OUT THE NEEDS OF THE TRENTON FIRE DEPARTMENT. BACK IN THE 19TH CENTURY, THERE WERE MANY FIRES WHICH BURNED OUT OF CONTROLD DUE TO THE PRIMITIVE WATER SUPPLY.

1903: THE WIRELESS CONNECTION

AS AN AMATEUR RADIO OPERATOR FOR MANY YEARS, I AM VERY INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF RADIO. FROM THE "RADIO" FOLDER IN MY COLLECTION, THIS SPLENDID SPECIMEN OF THE EARLY YEARS OF RADIO.

1903: "JACK THE HUGGER"

Well, I guess it could have been Jack the Mugger. Even 108 years ago we had wierdos roaming around the community. This clip comes from my collection and is in the "CRIME, MORALS, SOCIAL VALUES" folder in the Hamilton Local History Collection.
