1936: SOUTH BROAD STREET APPROACHING LIBERTY STREET

It seems like you can almost envision passing that old 1930's car heading into the city of Trenton. Bonderchuck Chevrolet would be on the left, out of the photo.

  1. Pretty amazing - Pat's Lunch or Diner is still going strong 3/4 of a century later.

Ronay's building has a new front, the same back and is now a vacuum and locksmith store. The next few buildings are still in place, too.

IIRC, Paul Gessmeyer's Sunset Motors used car lot would be at the immediate right off the field of view.

My Mom would have been 10 years old and my Dad 13 and attending 7th grade at Junior Four when this was taken. Great images!

  2. HI TOM.... THE GOOD OLD CLOCK AT BROAD AND LIBERTY. IT ALWAYS TOLD US HOW MUCH TIME WE HAD LEFT IN ORDER TO BEAT THE LATE CHARGE I OFTEN GOT CHARGED WITH. HAPPY DAYS.

Grat Photo of my house at 1308 So.Broad. It is the porch with the steps in the foreground. Pat's has been a mainstay on that corner since I was a kid in Jr.4. Agabeties shoe repair shop was next door, and the huge building nearest to the camera was Mose's cleaners. Paul& Clark Gessmyer owned "Reed" motors which was managed by Big Billy Murphy. Reed was Clark and Paul's mother's maiden name.

We moved to this house in 1956 when
I retuned from my stint in California. My mother loved sitting on this portico porch, and catching up with many old friends who were headed to Pat's diner.
In my Real Estate Investment days, I had bought an estate on Cedar lane, with two houses, and an extra lot on Berg Ave. It was a nice one story cottage, which I did a total rehab on for my mother to eliminate the stairs she had to climb. When I showed it to her, I thought there would be smiles of delight. Instead she told me she loved sitting on her porch on So. Broad St. and chatting with old friends. "Who am I gonna talk to here on Cedar Lane" she asked,"the only ones who pass by here are dead"! Taught me a lesson real quick. Always ask what mother's want, don't assume you know!

Great memories in this house albeit a short time before I married and left the nest.
