WOODLAWN PARK: THE EARLY YEARS

My home is on the site of the old Woodlawn Park and I have devoted many hours to researching photos relating to this very elusive site. The " WOODLAWN PARK" folder in the Hamilton Local History Collection is expanding nicely. There are a number of clippings that have yet to be formatted in order to present a very clear and pristine series of photos and articles. Stay tuned.

HI TOM....WOODLAWN PARK WAS A GREAT AMUSEMENT CENTER WHEN I WAS A KID. I THINK THE ADMISSION WAS ONLY 10 CENTS AND YOU COULD STAY ALL DAY. I RECALL THE MARATHON DANCES AND THE BIG BANDS THAT PLAYED. I REMEMBER WHEN MY SISTER ROSE ENTERED ONE OF THEIR CONTESTS. THE SWIMMMING POOL WAS A WELCOME ADDITION, THE ONLY OTHER PLACE TO SWIM WAS LAKESIDE OR THE SHORE. PLESANT MEMORIES, REGARDS.

MY FAVORITE RIDE WAS THE ROLLER COASTER AMONG MANY OTHER RIDES. YEARS LATER, THE PEOPLE FROM THE CASINO RESTAURANT RAN THE SWIMMING POOL AND DID FINE. HAPPY DAYS.

TOM...I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID'NT GET MORE COMMENTS ON WOODLAWN PARK. IT WAS THE BIGEST AND BEST ENTERTAINMENT PARK IN THE AREA DURING THE 20'S AND 30'S AND EVEN RED SKELTON WAS SAID TO PLAY THERE DURING THE MARATHON DANCES. I SURE REMEMBER IT AND KNOW THERE ARE MANY AROUND THAT DO. REGARDS,

  4. THESE WOODLAWN PARK GRAPHICS FALL UNDER WHAT I CALL "HARD CORE HISTORY." FIND THAT MANY OF THE YOUNGER GENERATION COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE THINGS WE OLD FOLKS REMEMBER. THAT IS WHY FACEBOOK IS SO POPULAR. WITH FEW EXCEPTIONS OLDIES FROM THE 60'S AND LATER ARE OF INTEREST TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION. THAT EXPLAINS THE LACK OF INTEREST BUT I WILL KEEP MY EYE ON THE PRIZE AND CONTINUE TO POST MATERIAL OF HISTORIC LOCAL INTEREST; VERY INTERESTING TO SOME, VERY BORING TO OTHERS. THIS IS NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST. IT IS MEANT TO BE A SOURCE OF LOCAL AND SOMETIMES NATIONAL HISTORY. SOME YEAR IN THE FUTURE, A STUDENT, SCHOLAR OR RESEARCHER WILL WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THESE SOMETIMES DRY AND OBSCURE SUBJECTS AND WE'LL BE THERE.

    TOM
