This news photo from Tom Frascella shows the team that was known as "Ferry's." Ferry's Garage was at the corner of Bayard and Hudson Street in Chambersburg. I had posted an earlier baseball related item in which I noted the "Red Sox" from the league in which these two teams were involved. I'm sure our Chambersburg-Trenton area baseball guru Ralph Lucarella can add some comments to this post.
HI TOM.. THESE TWO TEAMS WERE CONSTANT RIVALS IN CHAMBERSBURG. MY BROTHER LOU CAUGHT FOR THE RED SOX AND BOTH TEAMS WERE NEIGHBORS OF THE BURG AND VISIOUS COMPETITORS. DANNY REGAN ENDED UP AS ONE OF OUR HELPERS AT THE HAMILTON BOWLING LANES MANY YEARS LATER AFTER ATTENDING THE AMF AUTOMATIC PINSPOTER MACHINES SCHOOL. THANKS TOM FOR THESE MEMORIES.
ReplyDeletePete Dileo was a gym teacher while I attended Junior Three and was also a feared enforcer of discipline there as well. And he was not shy about his latter role. I had no idea he was a good baseball player to boot.
ReplyDeleteDID YOU NOTICE THAT PETE DILEO HAD 3 HITS IN THAT GAME. AS I RECALL, HE WAS QUITE A GOOD PLAYER, AS MANY OF THE OTHERS WERE. MY BROTHER LOU ALSO PLAYED ON THE TRENTON HIGH TEAM IN BASEBALL AND FOOTBALL. MY OTHER BROTHER "CHUCK" ALSO PLAYED FOOTBALL ON THS ALONG WITH MARTY DEVLIN BUT WERE ADVISED TO QUITE BY THE BASEBALL COACH. TWO OTHER P;AYERS THAT DID'NT PLAY THAT GAME WERE THE MONTERVINO BROTHERS, JOE AND MIKE. THEY WERE BOTH GOOD PLAYERS AND LED THE RED SOX IN MANY GAMES. REGARDS.
ReplyDeleteTHE CHAMBERSBURG RED SOX HAD STRIPED UNIFORMS SIMILAR TO THE YANKEES OF THAT ERA AND REALLY LOOKED GREAT COMPARED TO OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD TEAMS. MOST OF THE PLAYERS ON BOTH TEAMS ALSO PLAYED FOR THE HOLY NAME TEAM THAT ALSO PLAYED DURING THAT TIME. THANKS AGAIN TOM FOR THOSE MEMORIES OF THE 1920'S AND 30'S AND MAY GOD BLESS THOSE NO LONGER WITH US.
ReplyDeleteI WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF TONY FRASCELLA ON ELMER STREET, I'M WONDERING IF TOMMY FRASCELLA IS RELATED? TONY WAS A MANAGER OF THE STATE HIGHWAY TEAM IN THE INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE AND ALSO PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBERSBURG LITTLE LEAGUE AT CHESTNUT PARK. A WONERFUL PERSON ALONG WITH HIS WIFE KATE. REGARDS.
