1937: SCHROTH SQUAD FOR THE NEW SEASON

Once again, a number of familiar names from my past, many of whom come from prominent Trenton families.
The "BASEBALL" folder in the Hamilton Local History Collection is growing by leaps and bounds. More to come.

  1. HI TOM...HEAR WE GO AGAIN WITH THE SCHROTHS. I WAS SO DISAPOINTED WITH BEING ELIMINATED BY THE HAMILTON LEGION TEAM IN 1936. WE HAD A GOOD TEAM THAT YEAR BUT HAMILON REALLY WAS BETTER AND WENT ON TO WIN THE STATE TITLE. I NOTICE SAM MASSERINI WAS AMONG THOSE TRYING OUT FOR THE 1937 TEAM. WELL SAM SURE WENT ON TO PLAY PROFESSIONAL BALL AND ENDED UP PLAYING WITH THE NEWARK BEARS IN THE INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE. THAT'S ABOUT THE CLOSEST YOU CAN GET IN PLAYING WITH THE NEW YORK YANKEES. HE PLAYED THE OUTFIELD AFTER PITCHING IN HIS EARLY YEARS. THE SCHROTHS, STARTING IN THE 30'S, WERE WELL KNOWN IN THE AMERICAN LEGION TOURNAMENT AND LATER THEY HAD TO FORM A LEAGUE WITH THE WINNER REPRESENTING THE CITY. THERE WAS NOTHING BETTER FOR ME WHEN I WAS A KID THAN BEING SELECTED TO PLAY FOR THE SCHROTHS. THANKS A LOT TOM FOR THE MEMORIES.

  2. I see my late great friend, Bus Saidt was a candidate for the team's shortstop. Can anyone tell me if he in fact, made the team at that position?

  3. HI TONY....I MENTIONED THAT BUS SAIDT ALSO PLAYED WITH ME ON THE 1936 TEAM. HE WAS A UTILITY PLAYER ON BOTH TEAMS AND LATER ON, OF COURSE, HE WENT ON TO SPORTSCASTING. BEST WISHES FOR THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS, I SEE THEY GOT A GOOD START. BEST REGARDS

  4. Thanks Ralph. No Trentonians on this club but a world class team. Beat Dogers 2 of three in their yard, an excellent start. Now home for six.

I ENVY YOU TONY...BEING OUT THERE IN FRISCO MUST BE GREAT. WHILE IN THE NAVY I LIVED ON O'FARREL ST, I BELIEVE, BEFORE SHIPPING OUT TO THE CORAL SEA DURING THE WAR. IT WAS QUITE A CHANGE FROM LIVING IN TRENTON. CONTINUED BEST WISHES FOR THE GIANTS.

  6. Ralph, thanks for your service. Dad was USMC and made the landing on Iwo. Uncle was USNavy in the Pacific. Brother Jim retired from the USNavy. When Jim and I are together he boasts he is the smarter of the two of us, since he figured it out and retired after 23 yrs and it took me 30 yrs to figure it out. :)
Tom, Thank you for your service also.

HI RON...WE MISS THE HAMILTON BOWLING LANES ON ROUTE 33, DON'T WE. THAT WAS A HAPPY TIME AND GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO ON TO DO MANY OTHER VENTURES. I RECALL YOUR INTEREST ALONG WITH MANY OTHER NICE PEOPLE WHO PATRONISED THE LANES. BEST REGARDS.

ONE MORE THING TONY...DOES MOVING FROM CANDLESTICK PARK MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS PERFORMANCE. I IMAGINE THE WIND IS'NT AS BAD AT THE NEW STADIUM AND I'M SURE THE FANS APPRECIATE THE NEW LOCATION. I USED TO GO TO THE COW PALACE BACK IN 1945 TO SEE SOME EVENTS WHILE I WAS IN THE NAVY. BEST REGARDS.

  9. The difference between Candlestick Park and AT&T is like the difference between Bordentown and the French Riviera. It is not only a splendid edifice in which to play, it is located right on the Embarcadero and the Bay, surrounded by superb mass transportation. And that is only the tip of the ice burg. Come out and see it for yourself. I will give you a tour.

  10. I too was in the Navy, amphibious, but at a later time. It was one of the smartest things I ever did. And congrats on being part of the Battle of the Coral Sea; a very important victory for the US which proved to be the beginning of the end of the Japanese Navy. WW II is my second passion very close behind that of Baseball.

TONY...DURING THE WAR, WE LEFT SAN FRANCISO IN 1945 AND SPENT 21 DAYS AT SEA BEFORE ARRIVING AT THE NEW HEBRIDES ISLANDS. OUR FPO NUMBER WAS NAVY 140, IT WAS A LARGE BASE THAT WAS A SUPPLY DEPOT AND ASSEMBLY POINT FOR INVASIONS. HAVING BEEN A POSTAL SERVICE EMPLOYEE, WE HANDLED MAIL FOR THE ENTIRE AREA. I'M SURE YOU ALSO MUST HAVE MANY MEMORIES OF YOUR NAVEL SERVICE. BEST REGARDS.

  12. See why this website is good for one's health, well-being and longevity? I do believe that we older seniors are serving ourselves spiritual vitamins which give us a fierce zest for living!
