Hi Tom:
I
have enjoyed many of Ralph's baseball postings. Although I do not know
him I love his tales of the Schroths and other Trenton memorabilia.I grew up in Trenton a rapid Baseball fan, the Phillies and A's to be exact as I was a fervent Yankee hater. I still am.
This
baseball love and background perhaps helped to provide an impetus to
allow me to think about working in Baseball when the time came. So when I
got to Houston, Texas in late 1964 I set upon accomplishing just that.
It is a long story but I did get to .be one of the two guys who operated
the Astrodome scoreboard when it opened in 1965. The Phillies opened
the season that year and I befriended Bus Saidt, who I used to "bootleg"
listening to every night as my parents made me go to bed. I tricked
them. Anyhow Bus had to dart out as the team had a flight that night so I
had was given the honor of calling in his story to the Trenton Times
for him. We became friends until his untimely death many years ago, In
fact, I attended his funeral.
I
am about to begin my 48th year in Major League baseball, the last seven
with the World Champion Giants. We received a ring in 2010 and will get
another on April 20 to commemorate winning the Series last year. It has
been quite a ride.
So
please convey to Ralph that his tidbits are greatly appreciated and
look forward to more. Since my 98 year old mother is still alive an
kicking in Trenton, maybe I can get to meet him one day.
You take care and "see" you on your web site.

WELL!!!...THANK YOU TOM FOR THE BIG PLUG. I WOULD LIKE TO INFORM TONY THAT BUS SAIDT WAS A GOOD FRIEND AND TEAMMATE ON THE 1936 SCHROTHS TEAM. WE ATTENDED SCHOOL AT THE SAME TIME AND GREW UP TOGETHER. IT'S GREAT TO KNOW ABOUT TONY AND HIS AFILIATION WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS. MY BROTHER CHUCK AND I BOTH PLAYED SHORTSTOP WITH THE SHROTHS AND WAS HOPING TO MAKE BASEBALL A CAREER. I ENDED UP BUILDING THE HAMILTON BOWLING LANES WITH MY BROTHER LOU AND CHUCK, AFTER SURVIVING A CAR ACCIDENT, WENT TO MEDICAL SCHOOL AND BECAME A HEART SPECIALIST BEFORE GETTING INFECTED WITH CANCER AND PASSING AWAY AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 56. YOUR LOVE OF THE GAME WILL GIVE YOU THE ENJOYMENT YOU'VE EARNED. THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST TONY. REGARDS.
ReplyDeleteI MIGHT ADD, TONY, THE MAYOR OF TRENTON FOR MANY YEARS, ART (CHIRP) HOLLAND PLAYED WITH OUR SOUTHERDS TEAM IN THAT SAME TWI-LIGHT LEGUE THAT TOM IS SHOWING TODAY. THE MANAGER OF THAT TEAM WAS JACK DOUDIGAN AND HIS WIFE USED TO BAKE US A PIE FOR EACH TRIPLE WE HIT AND A HUGE CHOCOLATE CAKE FOR HOMERS. WELL CHIRP LIKED THE PIE BETTER AND ON HIS LONG HITS WOULD STOP AT THIRD TO GET THE PIE. JACK WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON AND SPENT A LOT OF HIS MONEY ON OUR UNIFORMS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ralph,
ReplyDeleteYour stories of local baseball is a treat to read and remember. I have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to work in the Game I love, working for 23 GM's; 23 Field Managers and countless Hall of Famers. We just returned from Spring Training in Arizona and in a few days we open against the hated Dodgers.Rings on the 20th. It don't get better than that.
HI TONY AND TOM.....I RECALL THAT WORLD SERIES GAME IN SAN FRANCISCO WHEN AN EARTHQUAKE STRUCT. MY SON IN LAW'S BROTHER WAS THERE WHEN IT HAPPENED AND SAID IT WAS SOME MESS. WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME AT LAKE TAHOE AND ENJOYED THE RIDE IN A GRAYHOUND FROM FRISCO TO THE LAKE. I'M SURE TONY ENJOYS HIS ATTACHMENT TO THE GIANTS AND THE REST OF HIS DAYS IN THE BIG LEAGUES. BEST REGARDS
ReplyDeleteI WOULD LIKE TO COGRADULATE TONY AND THANK HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS IN THE BIG LEAGUES AND HIS INTEREST IN MY ACTIVITIES ABUT TRENTON. HIS 98 YEAR OLD MOM COULD CERTINLY TELL HIM ALL ABOUT THE NICE THINGS IN OUR CAPITOL CITY. TONY AND GEORGE CASE ARE TWO TRENTONIANS THAT HAVE MADE IT BIG IN THE MAJORS. THANKS AGAN TONY
