How I miss our Transit Historian, the late Leyland "Lee" Buker. He was a walking talking encyclopedia on the Trenton Transit system from its earlies years and up to his unfortunate passing. I would wager that Lee would look at that photo and tell us who the operator of that beautiful old trolley was. Trenton Trolleys were being replaced by buses in the late 1930's
HI TOM....THE TROLLEYS GAVE ME A HEADACHE AS A KID, I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THEM GO. THE BUSSES GAVE THE PEOPLE IN THE BURG MUCH BETTER TRANSPORTATION AND THE DOLLAR BUS PASSES WERE A BIG BARGIN, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO THREW THEM OUT THE WINDOW TO THEIR FRIENDS. I NEVER DID THAT. BEST REGARDS.
ReplyDeleteHi Tom, The last year the trolleys ran in Trenton, was 1934. Trenton was one of the early converts to buses. rayfromvillapark
ReplyDeleteThe trolleys were wonderful. Inexpensive, non-polluting and a good option to the combustion engine. They gave Trenton so much character (ie San Francisco)
ReplyDeletealong with the Delaware River, canals and other waterways. Another bad decision to remove them along with the disaster called route 29.
I understand that if you lived a block from the tracks that was great but if you lived on the street with the tracks running in front of your home it was a horrible racket.

I remember the horse drawn trolleys. They were beautiful.

was composted. Trenton civic
leaders kept making the mistake of progress means better. Very limited. Continual poor choices.
Trenton was amazing but it is not too late. Good choices mean vision and seeing the big picture. Trenton will always be in my heart.
