Diane Hoffman, you made my day, along with of the many visitors to this website! The above "Sandwich Menu" from what we called "The Glendale" has been posted for all of us fugitives from the 1950's to enjoy. When I was a young guy back in that golden era, the Glendale, Landwehr's.

If you were really trying to impress your date, Lavender Hall was one of the IN places to take your best girlfriend on a Sunday afternoon. By the way, do you remember the big tree that grew right in the middle of the restaurant and through a hole in the roof at Lavender Hall? Another long forgotten "high class" destination was "Chubby's" way down in the area of the Camden County circle.

  1. Count me in as one of those guys who took my "special" date to the Glendale Tavern. However, the usual result was that it also turned out to be the last date. But nevertheless, as I look at the prices of their bill of fare, I now know why we took them there.

I can still taste, and yearn for that red onion salad they served with the wonderful steak.
Carolyn Hankins and her sister knew how to run really fine dining rooms. Carolyn's sister ran "Mary Marks".

Oh how I thirst for those days of yore.

Funny this should come up this week. Freddie Budassi's daughter ( or wife) passed away last week.
Freddie was the long time bartender at the Glendale, along with Moon Mullins.
A classy place for real people when life was good.

Hi Tom: I was thinking of Landwehr's just the other day. I went there on a date back in the 50s and was very impressed -- with the food/atmosphere and not so much the guy. I was there a few years ago and it was another restaurant and it did not have the same appeal. I guess nothing is the same as the original, at least in our memories. Regards

  5. I took a job as a bus boy then up to a waiter for a few months back in 1958 when I was discharged from the army. Hazel Landwehr was a wonderful kind lady.

  6. I had my wedding reception at Landwehr's back in the day. As a child and teen my parents often took me to Lavender Hall to meet their friends from Yardley for early dinner. Fond memories of those lovely places. Our family restaurant was closed on Sunday so dressing up and driving over the bridge in my dad's Buick was very special. I hear Lavender Hall has been renovated and reopened. That is Good News!!

Your mentioning Chubby's reminded me of another restaurant, on the Camden circle - a steak house with a large open grille and huge salads - but I can't recalll the name. Anybody remember?

  8. Candy:

It was called the "PUB" at the airport circle in Camden.

I went there for my Jr.prom party in 1951.

Speaking with folks from South Jersey down here on vacation, they tell me it'still in operation.

    Fond memmories
