1I37: NORTH BROAD STREET

Here's a closer look at the Garden Theater on North Broad Street, 1937. Stern's was a very popular store during the depression years. As seen in the photo, they took up two buildings.

  1. HI TOM....STERN'S AND HURLEY-TOBINS WERE THE POPULAR FURNITURE STORES IN THOSE DAYS. I LIVED WITH MY PARENTS WHEN I GOT MARRIED IN 1940 AND BOUGHT A 4 PIECE BEDROOM SUITE FROM HURLEY-TOBINS FOR $98 DOLLARS. 1940 WAS THE START OF BETTER DAYS IN OUR COUNTRY AND WE SOON FOUND AN APT ON EMORY AVE. FOR 18 DOLLARS A MONTH, I WAS WORKING NIGHTS AT THE POST OFFICE AND SOON HAD A REGULAR ROUTE. THOSE MEMORIES BRING BACK HOW LITTLE YOU NEEDED TO GET ALONG. BEST REGARDS.
