I present here a graphic which clearly shows that global warming was not a factor back in the 1930's as can be seen in the full page Trenton Times article. However, I must admit, I remember ice skating for days on end back in the 1940's when Kuser's Pond and St. Mary's pond were frozen over for days. I also remember when snow was a frequent occurrence in the central Jersey area. Today, all those storms miraculously evade our area, and most of the meteorologists forecast the weather we used to experience "to the north and west of the area."
HI TOM...I CAN RECALL SNOW ON THE GROUND ALMOST ALL OF THE WINTERS IN THE 30'S AND WE LOOKED FORWARD TO EARNING A FEW BUCKS SHOVELING THE SNOW OFF NEIGHBORS SIDEWALKS FOR 25 CENTS. IN FACT, SOME GUYS USED TO ICE SKATE TO WORK AT THE POST OFFICE IN THE 40'S. I'VE GOT MOVIES OF SOME VERY BAD STORMS WHILE WE WERE LIVING ON EDINBURG ROAD. THE WEATHER SURE HAS CHANGED IN RECENT TIMES. REGARDS.
ReplyDeleteI am glad I am a RETIRED meteorologist so I don't have to get in this discussion. Was bad enough when back in Robinsville, and we went to St Gregory's carnival. Father in law introduced me and told his old timer friends that I was a weather man on the Apollo missions. I caught hell for messing up the weather, by some of his farmer friends. :) Ron
ReplyDeleteHI TOM...RON REMINED ME OF THE TIME WE SPENT IN A RESTAURANT WITH SOME FRIENDS. THEY ALL WERE BRAGING ABOUT THEIR KIDS, ONE SAID THEIR SON WAS GOING TO BE A DOCTOR, HE WAS TAKING UP MEDICINE, ANOTHER SAID THEIR SON WAS GOING TO BE A LAWYER, HE WAS TAKING UP LAW. I STUCK OUT MY CHEST AND SAID MY SON WAS GOING TO BE AN ASTRONAUT, HE WAS TAKING UP SPACE. MY SON NEVER FORGAVE ME FOR THAT. BEST REGARDS FOR THE NEW YEAR
ReplyDeleteTom - Getting back to the pictures on this post, great ones by the way - I remember so well skating at Lekside in the late 50's and early 60's - those who lived there or nearby will know what I mean when I say it was magical! Skating at night was terrific - homeowners around the shore would shine floodlights on the lake and it was such fun skating from light to light. Remember "freezing cracks" that we would hear? We didn't have enought ice every winter to skate, and I remember receiving skates for Christmas when I was about 10. We didn't have enough ice for a few years and I grew out of them! Such wonderful memories!

Great memories, Eleanor. Gropp's Lake, AKA Lakeside is a local treasure. Not being an environmentalist, I always wondered what it would take to bring the lake back to the Lakeside where I spent so many wonderful years swimming. An article of a number of years ago, tells of our Hamilton High School choir having a beach party there back in the early 1950's. Moonlight on Gropp's Lake is an indelible memory.
