1935: SITE OF THE FUTURE GLEN CAIRN ARMS APARTMENTS

Back in my younger years, the Glen Cairn Arms facility was peopled by the more affluent citizens of the city of Trenton. My wife's Aunt and Uncle lived there for many years. Here's a rather pristine Times photo which was tweaked and enhanced for digitization and presented herewith. Today, those old apartments have fallen into disrepair and are no longer the home of our more affluent Trentonians. More on the Glen Cairn Arms can be found in the "LABELS" (Index" column over on the right side of this screen.

  1. How true Tom. I suppose "at worst" they provided an apartment for perhaps a member of the legislature to ease the burden of travel from the corners of the state. Those and the Carteret Arms had a wonderful view and were addresses that commanded a bit of respect in the 1950's and 60's. I was shocked when I had to enter them in the late 1970's with the trash filled halls and boarded up windows. They became tributes to the "Section 8" housing programs of Foggy Bottom and were mostly owned by carpetbaggers from the Bronx and Brooklyn.

  2. Tom, Passed by there a few months ago when driving up to Lambertville. It looked so sad. The Glen Cairn Arms in its glory came to mind. In my youth I could picture wealthy dowagers bejeweled for dinner when I rode by in the bus.

Just back on line after 3 months taking care of family member & matters that resulted from her passing. Sorry about your brother. At our stage of this game, it's tough losing our close family.

  3. HI TOM....THE GLEN CAIRN ARMS AND CARTERET CLUB WERE AMONG THE MOST ATTRACTIVE PART OF THE CITY WHEN I CARRIED MAIL THERE IN THE 50'S. THE GOVERNOR WALKED FROM THE STATE HOUSE TO THE CARTERET CLUB EVERY DAY AND CHATTED WITH ME. IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE THE CONDITION OF THAT AREA TODAY. BEST REGARDS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS.

  4. The Glen Cairn Arms was the first residence of my newly wed parents in 1935. I suppose if there is any landmark that completely symbolizes the complete and utter deterioration of out beloved home town, this is it. Thanks for posting what that this wondrous residence once looked like
