Here is a familiar view to many of us who traveled the Calhoun Street of old. I have scanned this in very high dots per inch to let you see the incredible details in the photo. I tried to enhance that black sign in the photo, but it was apparently painted over with a white coating and still shows the original Coca Cola ad.

ReplyDeleteApparently this photo was taken prior to the construction of the Glen Cairn Arms apartment building on W. State/Cahlhoun. The imposing stucture is missing from the skyline as you look to the right rear of this photo. The gas station/grocer became the site of the State of NJ motor pool refueling station. The hedge on the right was part of a yard that had the most beautiful rose garden on it, despite being immediately adjacent to the "famous" infamous Horseshoe Grille with it entry way surrounded by a lighted horseshoe.
The lovely tudor style home in the rear left beyond the canal feeder, was ultimately torn down to construct the short lived Holiday Inn. The Calhoun St. Bridge was for years in my youth referred too by the "old timers" as the "two cent" bridge, since that what it cost to cross it.
My Mom & Dad took their honeymoon trip across that bridge in a horse drawn wagon in 1915. Later in life she would be put on a Jet plane to visit my sister in Florida. My newphew Johnny Zuccarelli had to accompany her since she only saw planes from the ground up in the air. All that progress in 60 years!
Seems lately, we no longer show progress.

HI TOM....I DELIVERED MAIL ON W. STATYE ST. BETWEEN WILLOW AND CALHOUN FOR 3 YEARS AND GOT TO KNOW THAT SECTION PRETTY WELL IN THE EARLY 50'S. THEY GOT 3 DELIVERIES A DAY FOR ALL THOSE DOCTORS AND THE ROEBLING FAMILY PLUS MANY POLITICIANS. MRS. FERNIDAN ROEBLING LIVED ON THE CORNER OF CALHOUN AND FRANK CASTALDO FROM THE BURG WAS HER CHAUFER. I RECALL WHAT MIKE SAID ABOUT THE 2 CENT BRIDGE. I GUESS THAT'S WHY MOST PEOPLE USED THE MORRISVILLE BRIDGE TO PENNASAVED 2 CENTS. LIKE PHIL RIZZUTO ALWAYS SAID "HOLY COW". BEST REGARDS.
ReplyDeleteMIKE AND RALPH: I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOUR VERY INTERESTING COMMENTS TO MY GRAPHICS LEND A LOT TO THIS WEB SITE. IT'S REALLY NICE TO READ INPUT FROM OLD TIMERS WHO REMEMBER THE CITY AS IT WAS DECADES AGO. THANKS SO MUCH!
