1947: WEST STATE AND WARREN STREET

Few indeed are those of us who remember the 1940's and 1950's in Trenton who are not familiar with this exquisite photo of downtown Trenton in 1947. Traver's Book Store, Reid's Jewelers, Kaplan's, Kaufman's, Flagg Brothers, and even that beautiful "R-W.TRENTON" Fageol Twin Coach Trenton Transit bus presents a bittersweet nostalgic look back at the Trenton we all knew and loved so much.

  2. Dagnabbit! I wish I could read all of the signs for that stroll down State. Father & Son going "toe to toe" with Flagg Brothers" gave me a chuckle; one selling the "cool cat" look and Father & Son being very traditional. I finally got my "motorcycle boots" from Flaggs, they were bought with birthday money and had to be smuggled and hidden.

  4. Yeah Mike, I remember being on the bus to go home and looking at the greasers with DA's or like my rebel cousin with a Mohawk, "deck of Lucky Strikes" rolled in his sleeve and Mom reading my mind and giving my ear a smarting pinch. The worst was when a couple of the hoods caught me with my "cycle" boots and yanked up my pant legs and laughed ending my feeble Brando imitation.

  5. HEY GUYS, EVEN THOUGH IT'S PART OF OUR HISTORY, THERE ARE CERTAIN VERY CONTROVERSIAL APPENDAGES ATTRIBUTED TO DIFFERENT NATIONALITIES FROM THE PAST. IN FUTURE POSTS PLEASE REFRAIN FROM MAGNIFYING THEM. MY HERITAGE IS ENGLISH, AND I WAS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A "CHEESE HEAD" WHILE IRISH DESCENDANTS WERE "MICKS," AND THE "N" WORD WAS IN VOGUE BACK IN THE DAY. WE HAVE ALL GROWN UP SINCE THEN.

  6. Tom:
I hope you did not mistake "Greaser" for an ethinic slur??
That reference was made to guys like me (Polish/American) who hung our on State & Broad, wore pegged pants, and had our hair in DA's (Think rear end of Duck)from the hair cream, hence "Greasers". Realize you "Farm boys" from Hamilton were a little behind us City Slickers, but no Ethnic slur was said, or intended.
