1923: PRINCIPAL THIRZA STERLING MCGALLIARD

Ms. McGalliard was another Principal from "the old school" who insisted on self control, discipline, and good manners. I originally assumed that like Emily Reynolds, and Leona Kistardt both of whom had schools named for them. that Thirza Sterling McGalliard was also named for her as a prominent Hamilton school employee. However, once again, I was in error. I am informed that the school was named for William McGalliard whose farm was part of the property on which the school is located. Thanks for the correction, "Peggy." who wrote:

Tom, I thought McGalliard Elementary was formally called William J. McGalliard or a name similar to that, not Thirza McGalliard Elementary. Am I wrong?

  2. Mrs McGalliard was my teacher in 6th grade. She was really tough~!
I was designated to collect the lunch money (15 cents) in the cafeteria. If I left a minute early, she hollered...if i stayed until exactly 11:45 AM she hollered " Why are you still here?"
A tough woman to please! I was also appointed Captain of the Safety Patrol (!!!???) & had to be at school early to make sure that the others were on their posts...not an easy thing for me, as I had to get my sister dressed & combed for Reception grade & she wasn't very co-operative! LOL My Mom worked the day shift at Eastern Aircraft. We were "latch-key" kids before it was in style...there was a war on & things had changed in families
