1938: MONTGOMERY WARD COMES TO TRENTON

This store was gone by the time I came of age and ventured into "Downtown Trenton." However, I would bet that a number of my senior citizen visitors recall that store. I do remember seeing bicycles sold by Ward's, but I can't remember the brand name, (nor can I recall the Sears-Roebuck bicycle names. Anybody wanna volunteer that info?

  1. Montgomery Wards bikes were Hawthornes. The Sears brands were Elgin and J. C. Higgens.

I was a Schwinn kinda guy.

  2. Hi Tom: I bought my first TV from the store in 1947. It was a 7 inch and one of the first on the market. Not much latter I bought a 10 inch with all the other features like a radio and record player. At that time, the big problem was installing an antena on the roof. I think Montgomery Ward took much of the business away from Sears because it was a much bigger store at the time. Regards, Ralph

  4. Tom,

As always, I love your blog and what you do. As a younger, lifelong resident of Trenton, I enjoy your posts of the bygone days of the city and surrounding areas.

I just wanted a bit of clarification regarding this post. The title and caption state 1938, but the file name for the picture states 1933. Can you please clarify the correct date? Also, where on East State Street was the store located?

    Thanks again.

  5. HI JAY:

THE DATE IS 1938 AS SHOWN IN THE "SHADED" ID I PLACED AT THE TOP OF THE GRAPHIC AND ARTICLE. SORRY TO SAY I CAN'T FIND ANY REFERENCE TO 1933 IN THE "FILE" YOU ARE REFERRING TO. HOWEVER, THE ARTICLE AND THE STORE OPENING OCCURRED IN 1938. THANKS FOR BEING A VISITOR TO MY BLOG. I HOPE YOU RETURN OFTEN.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!
    TOM GLOVER
