1913: THE NEW FRANKLIN SCHOOL TAKES SHAPE

Another rare State Gazette photo of the Franklin School as it was being constructed during the year 1913. I am particularly intrigued by the building to the right. It looks like it could have been an austere school house. Hopefully I will uncover another article that will identify it.

  1. Hi Tom:)
    Love this picture.
My Alma Mater in its Youthful
    Glory !!:)
This is a rear view of the school
the picture was taken at the corner
    of Dayton and William Streets.
That house next to it would have
    a William Street address.. an
even number on the 200 block..if
anyone has a city directory of
Trenton pre-1913 it might be in there.
From what I understand there was
a school here since 1869.. so maybe
the old school didnt use the entire
half block and thus that little
    house..

  2. Thanks for that input, Mack. If there was a school on the site, it would have been one of those small "one room" schoolhouses which proliferated back in the early years. There seemed to be a definite pattern in years gone by. From the one room school house, to the expanded school building which was usually 4 rooms, and then the final construction which you see in the Franklin School graphic.
