It's quite a hike from the Kuser Farm neighborhood in which I lived, to the "Broad" on South Broad in the Chambersburg section of Trenton. Given that distance, there were numerous times we walked there for an especially good move. We often walked to the neighboring "Bijou"
on So. Clinton Avenue. Even though the latter theaters was the "Beeezhoo," we Americanized it with the unlikely name of the "BYEJOE."
According to Yahoo Maps:
ReplyDelete(all distances approximate as
addresses used are not exact).
The Bijou and RKO were a bit over
2 miles from your house.
This is sort of the same distance
Independence Mall was from my
house. They are both within walking
distance but are mini-hikes:)
Hamilton High was about 1.3 miles
from your house. Trenton High
was .98 mile from my house as I
was at the other end of the Burg
but someone that didnt seem far
at all as I walked it every day.
My Paper Route #2 ended at South
Olden and Redfern. about 8 blocks
from your old house (and .92
mile from my house).
You could almost create a theory
out of this that walks a mile or less were of little note or stress
in kid walking terms but there reached a point likely around 1.25
miles where they became a mini-hike:)
Well said, Mack. I remember back in 1946 when my buddy Don Slabicki and I walked from the Kuser Farm neighborhood, all the way down to Johnston Cadillac on North Olden Avenue Extension. We were collecting automobile catalogs and brochures. We just never considered any tiring or wear and tear physical activity. By the way, we didn't walk to HHS. Joe Layton's bus picked us up every day. I DID walk to the Saturday night Canteen, through very spooky and rural Forest Valley.
