1914: "THE HILL:" AKA THE WESTERN SECTION

I remember when the western section of Trenton along W. State Street out in what we called the "western section" was prime real estate. Doctors', Dentists' and other professional offices proliferated in the beautiful homes that lined an equally beautiful street. My wife Judy's relatives had a home over in an area near Cadwalader Park which we called "Cracker Hill." I have no idea what the cracker was supposed to mean, but the "Cracker Hill" area was a delightful area of stately trees, beautifully maintained streets, and exquisite homes. It was the habitat of Trenton's more affluent citizens.

  1. THIS INTERESTING NOTE RECEIVED FROM SALLY LOGAN GILMAN REMEMBERING GROWING UPP IN THE "WEST END" SECTION OF TRENTON:

Hi Tom: My family, the Logans and my grandmother Hutchinson, lived on the 900 block of Carteret Avenue, one street over from west State Street where the homes were large and lovely. I used to roller skate around the block and enjoyed the large trees, manicured lawns and wide sidewalks on W. State Street, between Gouverneur and Parkside avenues. Those, indeed, were the days. Tkanks again for the memories. Sally Logan Gilman

  2. My mother always calls that area "Cracker Hill." She says that during the Depression the residents of those large homes ate crackers because they spent what little money they had on their homes and could not afford to buy groceries.
