1996: TOM GLOVER'S WILF LOCKETT SEANCE

I remember way back in the 1930's, when we were in the heart of "The Great Depression," we had regular visits to our home and back yard by some of my father's drinking buddies. At least one of them was from the Lockett family; in this case, one whom I recall my father referring to him with the nickname, "Willf." I assume it was short for Wilfred. We had two huge oak trees in our yard at 119 Hartley Avenue. It was under these trees on a warm spring or summer day the I remember one of the Lockett boys cutting my hair, and also the hair of all males in the yard at the time. We couldn't afford a visit to the barber. It was all mom and pop Glover could do to keep food on the table. Those haircuts would have paid for barter style. Hair cuts for the boys, and a chicken from the Glover mini chicken farm, or perhaps a bag of Jersey tomatoes, or a few jars of mom Glover's grape, strawberry or peach jelly. The hair cuts I got gave me the appearance of those hair cuts one would get if a bowl was placed over the head. Being a young lad of 5 or 6, my appearance was immaterial. I hadn't quite discovered the fairer sex at that tender age.
