1920: ST. RAPHAEL'S CHURCH, WHITE HORSE
IT'S ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULLY LAID OUT CHURCHES IN THE DIOCESE OF TRENTON. BACK IN THE 60 THROUGH THE 80'S, WHEN I WAS A MEMBER OF ST. ANTHONY'S HOLY NAME SOCIETY, I MADE THE ANNUAL MONSIGNOR CREAN LUNCHEON AT ST. RAPHAEL'S BEAUTIFUL CHURCH. THE ABOVE PHOTO SHOWS THE ORIGINAL CHURCH AS IT LOOKED PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PRESENT EDIFICE.
1913: BRINGING RELIGION TO THE BOONDOCKS
1913: "LEWD?" YOU SHOULD SEE US NOW!
With the unbridled prurient trash that is part of many 21st century American movies and television programs, the above article reveals a stark contrast to the moral character of American morals back in the early part of the 20th century. One wonders where the ACLU was when the Trenton Police actually took part in the censorship of "lewd" vaudeville performers.

1913: "COOK Y;" A LOCAL LEGEND
When I was a boy, the original Cook Y on South Olden and Greenwood Avenue was boarded up and closed. I remember climing though one of the windows with a couple of my buddies who were with me on the way home from a matinee at the Gaiety Theater. We didn't stay long. The sight of the drained and trash filled swimming pool made for a very spooky and scary environment. Today, the very active Cook Y facility is just up the street from my
home.

1913: HOPEWELL M.E. CHURCH
In 1913, the Trenton Times took over the old "True American" newspaper. The takeover was refreshing: more local interest stories, more photo graphs, and more Mercer County area coverage of Hopewell, Pennington, Hamilton, Ewing, etc. Above is an interesting article on Hopewell's Methodist Episcopal Church. Articles such as these are interesting from a genealogical point of view. There are many old line Hopewell area surnames in the listing of attendees to the "Harvest Home."
1913: BROAD STREET PARK M.E. CHURCH
1913: Tom Speculates
The beautiful mansion illustrated with that fancy mansard roof was once the home of C.V. Meade, of the very earliest Mercer Rubber Company. Meade's estate was located in the triangle-shaped area of land between today's Nottingham Way and Hamilton Avenue in Mercerville. Mr. Meade had a beautifully landscaped estate on that plot of land. I have super-imposed a segment of a Hamilton Township map to show the triangular area of the Meade estate.
APOLOGIES FOR THE GRAPHIC. REMEMBER,
EARLY OFFSET PRINTING TECHNOLOGY WAS IN ITS EARLY STAGES.
1913: RISQUE MUSIC!
Those who are readers of my "Sentimental Journey" column, and my earlier "The Way We Were" column will recall that I also have a problem with some of the trashy "music" that is being foisted on us courtesy of the leaders of the contemporary music world. The above article is from my "Crime, Morals, Social Values" folder. The "shocking" lyrics in the 1913 article above pale by comparison with some of the trash in some of contemporary America's musical repertoire. What's that old saying....? "No matter how things change, they seem to stay the same."
1863-1913 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SWAMP ANGELS ARRIVAL IN TRENTON
1913: JOSEPH HAMER'S FASCINATING STORY
I WAS PARTICULARLY INTRIGUED READING ABOUT THE PREDECESSOR TO PASTOR JIM COSTON'S FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ON CENTRE AND BRIDGE STREET IN SOUTH TRENTON WHEN IT WAS KNOWN AS THE "TRENTON AND LAMBERTON BAPTIST CHURCH. " EQUALLY INTERESTING IS MR. HAMER'S DESCRIPTION OF THE CHAMBERSBURG AREA WHEN IT WAS OPEN FARM AND FIELD.

(NOTE: DUE TO THE LARGE SIZE OF THE ABOVE GRAPHIC, AN 800 X 600 SCREEN RESOLUTION WILL MAKE THE ARTICLE MORE LEGIBLE.)
2008: FRANCIS "BUD" FOLEY AND THE RFK FUNERAL TRAIN
THIS INTERESTING GRAPHIC FROM THE TRENTON TIMES RECALLS THE PASSAGE OF THE ROBERT F. KENNEDY FUNERAL TRAIN AS IT PASSED THROUGH TRENTON DURING THE TRAGIC MURDER OF SENATOR KENNEDY. LONG TIME FAMILY FRIEND FRANCIS "BUD" FOLEY WAS THE CHIEF CREW DISPATCHER OF ALL PASSENGER TRAINMEN IN NEW YORK'S PENN STATION.

1886: THE ROBBINS BURIAL GROUND
I PASSED THE ROBBINS BURIAL GROUND YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS ON THE ROAD AS A SALESMAN. THE ROBBINS FAMILY WAS VERY PROMINENT IN THE HISTORY OF HAMILTON SQUARE AND THE CENTRAL NEW JERSEY AREA. DR. ROBBINS WAS A PROMINENT PHYSICIAN IN HAMILTON SQUARE. LESTER ("LES") ROBBINS CARRIED ON THE FAMILY NAME IN THE HAMILTON AREA FOR MANY YEARS. THE TOP GRAPHIC IS A EULOGY WRITTEN BY HAMILTON'S JACK LACY, PAYING A TRIBUTE TO ONE OF HAMILTON TOWNSHIP'S CANDIDATES FOR A "HAMILTON HALL OF FAME:" BELOW IS AN 1886 ARTICLE ON THE ROBBINS BURIAL GROUND IN CLARKSBURG, N.J.
1944: LT. JERRY MIGLIACCI HONORED
1943: MAJOR ALBERT BAUMLER: LOCAL AIR ACE
THIS IS JUST ONE OF THE REASONS I REALLY LIKE TO PAGE THROUGH THE VERY FEW TRENTON TIMES I HAVE FROM THE WORLD WAR II ERA. HEROES LIKE MAJOR BAUMLER RECEIVED ONLY A DAY OR TWO IN THE LIMELIGHT WHEN THIS PHOTO WAS PUBLISHED BACK IN 1944. I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA THAT HIS HEROIC WWII RECORD HAS BEEN PRESERVED ON THIS WEBSITE AND IN THE "WWII" FOLDER IN THE HAMILTON LIBRARY'S LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION
FROM A MEMBER OF THE "PLAAG'S GROVE" ERA
I RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING EMAIL FROM "PEGGY," WHO LIVED A FEW BLOCKS FROM MY HARTLEY AVENUE HOME, AND A BLOCK AWAY FROM PLAAG'S GROVE. I HAVE MANY HAPPY MEMORIES OF THE TIME I SPENT THERE WITH THEIR WEEKEND OUTINGS, AND OUR DAILY SANDLOT BASEBALL GAMES. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE EMAIL, PEGGY, AND YES, I TRY TO UPDATE THIS WEBSITE DAILY. INCIDENTALLY, AND COMPLETELY COINCIDENTALLY, MY "SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY" COLUMN IN TODAY'S (AUGUST 24) TRENTON TIMES COLUMN IS CENTERED ON PLAAG'S GROVE. THERE WILL BE MORE COLUMNS IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU ARE NOT A TIMES SUBSCRIBER, YOU CAN PROBABLY FIND THE COLUMN WHEN IT IS POSTED. GO TO GOOGLE, USE THE KEYWORDS TOM GLOVER HAMILTON TRENTON. THERE WILL BE QUITE A FEW REFERENCES TO THIS WEBSITESITE, BUT BURIED IN THERE YOU WILL FIND THE COLUMN. THANKS AGAIN FOR WRITING. IT'S EMAILS SUCH AS YOURS THAT MAKE ALL THE EFFORT WORTHWHILE.

PEGGY WRITES:
Hello Mr. Glover
This is Peggy. I have written to you a few times in the past few months.
I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that I really enjoy your Hamilton Yearbook. I have been on it a few times. The last time I was on it I found a little write up about the Plaag Family who lived on Cedar Lane and Plaag's Grove on Atkins Ave. Boy, we sure do live in a small world.
My sister mentioned Plaag's Grove to me about a month ago and said she remembered our grandfather playing in Fritz's Band at Plaag's Grove now and then. His name was Michael Czajkowski. So, I went on your website and was surprised to find the wedding write up for Plaag's daughter and about Plaag's Grove with pictures. I couldn't believe it! What was even more interesting was that in the beginning of 1960 my family moved to Cedar Lane near Newkirk and Kuser Farm and the Plaag's lived on the other end near S. Olden Avenue. I am sure they didn't live there when we moved in the neighborhood but it was interesting to know they lived so close to us and that Plaag's Grove was just a street over from us. It definitely is a small world isn't it.
Thank you again for your Hamilton Yearbook. Hope this message wasn't too long.
Have a good day. Peggy
PS Do you update the Hamilton Yearbook from time to time?

A FRIENDLY REMINDER
THIS SITE WILL SERVE YOU QUITE WELL WITH THE STANDARD SCREEN RESOLUTION, BUT IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE READING SOME OF THE FINE PRINT ON MY LARGER GRAPHICS, I SUGGEST YOU CHANGE YOUR SCREEN RESOLUTION FROM 1024 X 768 TO 800 X 600.

1941: MORE OF "THE GREATEST GENERATION"
I HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH MY WWII FOLDER IN THE HAMILTON LIBRARY'S LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION. AMERICA ON THE HOMEFRONT BACK THEN HAD A SPIRIT OF PATRIOTISM WHICH WAS IN MANY WAYS UNIQUE. THE MEN YOU SEE IN THE GRAPHIC ABOVE HAD NO IDEA THAT IN 11 MONTHS THEY WERE GOING TO BE EMBROILED IN WORLD WAR II.

1944: TRENTON SEABEES IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC
I am currently "wading" through a very large "WWII" folder in the Hamilton Library's Local History Collection. I began collecting material on that war way back in the 60's and have concentrated on newspaper clippings and photos. Many of our local members of the "Greatest Generation" are pictured as in the photo above.

1868: LOCALTRENTON AREA NEWS AND OTHER EPHEMERA
THE NEWSPAPERS OF THIS ERA WERE PRINTED ON "RAG" CONTENT PAPER AND SHOW HARDLY ANY FADING OR "FOXING." (FOXING IS THE NATURAL TENDENCY OF PAPER TO TURN TAN THOUGH OXIDATION AND OTHER NATURAL CAUSES. THE PAPER FROM WHENCE THIS LOCAL NEWS PAGE WAS EXTRACTED IS ONE OF COUNTLESS LATE 1860'S AND COMPLETE 1870'S RAG CONTENT PAPERS IN THE HAMILTON LIBRARY'S LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION.
1944: WAAC RECRUITING IN TRENTON
BACK IN THE EARLY PART OF THE WAR, AMERICAN WOMEN WERE CALLED UPON TO JOIN THE "WAAC," THEN KNOWN AS THE WOMENS' AUXILIARY ARMY CORPS. THE NAME WAS CHANGED TO "WAC," AND BECAME KNOWN AS THE WOMENS' ARMY CORPS. LITTLE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE THOUSANDS OF WOMEN WHO SERVED VALIANTLY DURING WORLD WAR II.
I ALWAYS LOVE IT WHEN ONE OF THE PICTURES OR ARTICLES INCLUDES A VISITOR OR A VISITOR'S FRIEND. THIS MORNING I RECEIVED THIS EMAIL FROM MARCIA SHERMAN DAVIS WHO IS PICTURED IN THE TOP PHOTO. I HAVE RE-DONE THE IMAGE TO ENLARGE IT. THANKS SO MUCH FOR WRITING, MARCIA!
MARCIA WRITES:
Hi again Tom, Very surprised when I opened your site this morning. I remember very well the WAC recruiting event. That's me in the middle of the front row in the WAC uniform. My grandmother was a seamstress and made the uniform to exact detail and the WACs gave me the hat, bars and insignia. My family had a restaurant right across the Hamilton from a Fort Dix motor pool and all the soldiers used to come in to eat. They kinda adopted me as their mascot. I remember sitting in the lead jeep with the Commander in a victory parade up Broad St right around the same time, wearing my uniform. I think the girl to my right in yuor picture is Eileen Kelty, then of McKinley Ave, who was a good friend. Going into your site always brings back good memories of Trenton. What is amazing to me is that 45 yrs later, while having worked for the Dept of Defense for many years all over the world, DOD transferred me to Fort Dix from Europe because my mom became critically ill and I had to care for her. Somehow felt that WAC experience was a forecast of my later career.

1950" REMEMBER THOSE ANNUAL CLASS ELECTIONS?
Here's an interesting bit of memorabilia from the class of '50. Carl Pack Vs. Bill Flury for class president. For the real nostalgiacs among us, the green creature sitting on top of the "C" for Bob Clayton who was a Vice Presidential candidate, is a "Schmoo." You may remember that little critter as being featured in Al Capp's "L'il Abner" comic strip. Speaking of Al Capp.....Daisy Mae, I miss you!

1950: CRITERION FOR JUNE, 1950 PAGE 1
I tried to placing 4 pages together, but when I posted them as a single graphic, the text was too small. I could read it on my 17" LCD monitor, but it is illegible on the smaller screens and I am sure on the old style "CRT" monitors. So here is page 1. Pages 2, 3, and 4 follow. What memories!
Carl Pack, Eleanor Brazier (who was dating my cousin, the late Dick Walker back then), the late Jack Yago, Jimmy Thomann, Jimmy Brennan, and last but by no means least, the very handsome Bill Beckett (who was dating my dear wife of 54 years back then, Judy Britton.)
