1876: DIDN'T THEY CALL IT "THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT?"

WHEN I WAS A BOY AND RIGHT UP TO MATURITY, THE MOVIES LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE INDIANS WERE"SAVAGES." MY BUDDIES AND I CHEERED AS WE SAW RANDOLPH SCOTT, TYRONE POWER, AND OTHER HOLLYWOOD STARS ENGAGED IN BATTLE AGAINST THE INDIAN ENEMY. WHEN I REACHED THE AGE OF REASON AND BEGAN TO READ THE LARGELY IGNORED NEWS ACCOUNTS OF HOW THE "SAVAGES" WERE DRIVEN FROM LANDS WHICH THEY LIVED ON FOR MANY HUNDREDS OF YEARS, I REALIZED THE GREAT INJUSTICE WHICH WAS DONE TO THE MANY INDIAN TRIBES THAT ONCE OCCUPIED MOST OF AMERICA.
