Hi Tom.....Those Were The Days
My name is Joe Fratto. I live now in Florida and have been here for the past 28 yrs. My cousin sent me your article on ' THOSE WERE THE DAYS". I really got a kick out of it because I remember so well all those things mentioned. I was in the Red Band in Trenton High and what a night Sports Night was. I also remember Yards dept. store, Dunhams dept. store, Van Scivers, Kitty Kelly Shoes ( my first job), Miles Shoes, AS Beck Shoes, National Shoes and of course Nedicks on State and Broad. Let us not forget Arnold Constable, The Lincoln Theater, The Trent Theater, The Brunswick Theater and the Broad Theaters. Also how about The Eton Shop, Byers Mens Shop, Borden Castena Dairy, The Garden Theater. I think I should also mention the local Jazz Blues Host on WBUD...George Luther Bannister. I am a jazz saxophonist and I played all those clubs in Trenton. Remember the Tremont, The Cove, Murphy's on Olden Ave, The Downtown Club,Jims TAvern and how about White Horse Lanes where believe it or not Bill Haley and His Comets got their start there. How about Independence Mall....that is the site where Vic Rice's Driving range was. Let us also mention the cab companies...Terminal Cab, Capitol Cab (my dad owned his own Capitol Cab), Penn Cab. Last but not least....the place to eat steak sandwiches was Pete's and the Del Rio. Pizza was a strong item also...Dominick Pica's and Maruccas were the hot spots along with Delorenzo's and Lous on Clinton St. One more addition the high schools..rivals were Trenton High and Trenton Catholic...I went to both of those schools but graduated from Trenton High.
Well I guess I gave you a few more for your next column....as Bob would say "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES."
