THE BROMLEY TAX REVOLT

THEY WERE ABOUT TO FORM THEIR OWN BOROUGH AND SECEDE FROM HAMILTON
TOWNSHIP. THEIR TAX MONEY WAS COLLECTED BY THE TOWNSHIP, BUT THERE WAS LITTLE TO SHOW IN THE WAY OF CIVIC IMPROVEMENTS. AS A RESIDENT OF BROMLEY FOR MORE THAN 45 YEARS, I MUST ADMIT THAT I SOMETIMES WONDER IF THE TOWN FATHERS GAVE AS MUCH ATTENTION TO BROMLEY AS THEY DID TO HAMILTON SQUARE, YARDVILLE, AND THE MORE AFFLUENT AREAS OF HAMILTON. A RIDE DOWN MY ATLANTIC AVENUE STREET AFTER A HEAVY RAIN WILL REVEAL HUGE PUDDLES ALONG THE CURB WITH LITTER FLOATING ON THE WATER. THE STANDING WATER ALONG THE ENTRANCE WAY TO MY DRIVEWAY HAS RUINED THE CONCRETE ENTRY TO MY DRIVEWAY AND LEECHED INTO THE MAIN DRIVEWAY. MANY YEARS AGO, I MADE AT LEAST 3 ATTEMPTS TO HAVE THE SITUATION ALLEVIATED. ON THE LAST ATTEMPT, A FELLOW WITH A CLIP BOARD WHO WAS ASSESING THE SITUATION TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS "IN THE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT," AND THERE IT HAS REPOSED FOR ALL THESE MANY YEARS. WHEN THE STANDING WATER PROBLEM SUBSIDES, THE LITTER REMAINS. I HAVE LEARNED TO LIVE WITH THE PROBLEM, BUT MUST ADMIT THAT I WONDER IF SUCH A SITUATION WOULD OCCUR IN THE MORE "UPSCALE" NEIGHBORHOODS. I THINK NOT.
