1896: Agitating for a Paved So. Broad Street

In the 1800's, today's So. Broad Street was known as the White Horse Turnpike. It was operated by an organization which was very derelict in maintaining the thoroughfare. Many stories tell of farmers coming from Southern New Jersey getting their wagons mired in the mud. The problem lasted for years. At that time, it was a toll road. One known toll gate was in the area of today's South Broad and Lalor Street.
