1944: THE GLOVER HARTLEY AVENUE HOME

"YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN." HOW STRANGE, AFTER 74 YEARS ON PLANET EARTH, I STILL WISH I COULD BE ALL ALONE IN THAT HOUSE ON THE CORNER OF HARTLEY AND NEWKIRK AVENUES FOR JUST A FEW HOURS. TAKE AWAY ALL THE NEW ADDITIONS THAT MOM AND POP GLOVER COULD NEVER AFFORD AND LET ME JUST WANDER AROUND AND REMEMBER THAT GRAND OLD HOME AS I REMEMBER IT: MOM GLOVER STIRRING A POT OF CHICKEN SOUP OVER OUR KEROSENE STOVE IN THE "SHED." I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SIT IN THE CORNER OF THE DINING ROOM IN MY "SECRET SPOT" UNDER THAT BIG OLD RADIO WHERE I LISTENED TO MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD HEROES, HOP HARRIGAN, TOM MIX, SUPERMAN, TERRY AND THE PIRATES, AND THE LONE RANGER,AND ALSO WHERE I FOUND MY LOVE OF READING AS I TORE THROUGH VOLUME AFTER VOLUME OF "BLACK BEAUTY," THE "BUDDY" BOOKS, ROBIN HOOD, AND TOO MANY TO LIST......DOWN TO THE BASEMENT WHERE DON SLABICKI AND I BUILT COUNTLESS MODEL AIRPLANES....AHH YES, MEMORIES. BUT SADLY, I AGREE THAT "YOU CAN'T PHYSICALLY GO HOME AGAIN," BUT YOU CAN IF YOU HAVE A PLETHORA OF MEMORIES.
