Tom - In 1947 - 1953 some folks might remember that the school included Reception and 1st grade in one room taught by Mrs. Sarah Purdunn, 2nd and 3rd in one room taught by Mrs. Mae Drugan, 4th grade by Mrs. Helen MacCracken, and 5th by Mrs. Alice Walsh in the two rooms upstairs. The janitor and crossing guard on Broad St. was Cecil Kilby. The principal was Mr. Walter Hancock, who also was principal of Yardville and Groveville Schools. Lakeside Girl
I am enjoying your blog very much. I remember climbing the trees in front of the old school. If I remember correctly they were blackberry trees. I STILL have a scar on my knee after doing soap carvings in Mr. Foster's 5th grade classroom. There was the long concrete slab that led to a couple steps which led to the sidewalk. I had soap on the bottom of my patent leather Mary Jane's and slid to the steps and skinned my knee. I loved the old school more than the newer school which was brighter and more modern.

ReplyDeleteMany thanks, "Lakeside Girl," for setting the time period when Hamilton Grammar schools had "Reception Grades" instead of "Kindergartens."
