1943: WWII SCRAP DRIVE

"OUCH!...."
he said, as he spoke for every historian on planet earth as he witnessed the destruction of countless historic things of metal. Back during World War II when I was a boy, the government desperately needed scrap metal for the war effort. I can remember walking for miles around our neighborhood looking for discarded cigarette packs which would yield valuable lead foil. I dare say there are many viewers of this site who recall patiently scavaging those cigarette packs and watching that ball of foil grow and grow. As to the illustration where the gentleman is taking a sledge hammer to that 1860's cast iron fence, OUCH! I have seen old automobiles chopped up and turned into scrap metal. One wonders how many Mercer autos met the fate of being delivered to the scrap dealer. I repeat: "OUCH!"
