1938: Trenton's Motor Vehicle Inspection Station

Ahh, yes, I remember it well! This was the one place where a teenage boy wanted to avoid like the proverbial plague. We had to go there every year to that N.J. Motor Vehicle Inspection Station on Prospect Street. It was very rare that one of our "clunkers" would pass on the first try. A hole in that noisy muffler? Stuff it with a copious amount of steel wool. "Suicide Knob" on the steering wheel? Be sure to take it off before you go through the line. The motor vehicle inspectors always seemed like they had a bad night before...nary a smile; remember?
