They had no clue, but all George and I knew, was Papa's Tomato Pies, which was within walking distance of our house...it was on Chambers St near Roeblings in the early 50s, when we lived on Franklin St.
RonRon Boundnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19041693.post-31692664439406327572011-10-06T13:34:00.747-04:002011-10-06T13:34:00.747-04:00Some places used to have a stand run by the women ...Some places used to have a stand run by the women of the church and they would dish out individual size deep fried "tomato pie" that was a little bit of heaven. The last time I had this was at the Saint James (the other, little burg), in high school.

I guess the secret of a good pie aside from the crust, lies in a good home made sauce and a fine quality cheese. One take time and the other probably is too expensive these days. The Casianni sisters always had a few huge pots bubbling on the stove at their place across from the Brunswick Theater.

Ed MillerickAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19041693.post-63965158204476604212011-10-06T12:08:00.393-04:002011-10-06T12:08:00.393-04:00Great post Tom:)))Great post Tom:)))Mackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11392109543447996982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19041693.post-5924286984816051612011-10-06T11:17:40.081-04:002011-10-06T11:17:40.081-04:00HI TOM...I'M GONNA REPEAT WHAT I'VE SAID M...HI TOM...I'M GONNA REPEAT WHAT I'VE SAID MANY TIMES. IN THE 20 AND 30'S PAPA'S ON BUTLER STREET WAS THE BEST. TOMATOE PIES IN THOSE DAYS WERE MOSTLY ALL CHEESE, NOT LIKE TODAY. I THINK THE ONLY TOPPING ADDED WAS ANCHOVIES. BUT CAN YOU IMAGINE A LARGE PIE FOR 25 CENTS. GOD BLESS THE OLDEN DAYS.Ralph Lucarellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06710107087683397946noreply@blogger.com
