1936: SWIMMING IN THE CANAL

It was a very popular venue for those kids in pre-home air conditiong years. Here we see a pretty clear news photo of a group of locals enjoying the canal on a hot and humid Central Jersey day.

Tom:
I too used this area to swim in the canal. If memory serves me, it was in the area of "Red Horan's amusement rides adjacent to the kiddie park.
Lots of fun, and fond memories of the bears. I think "Carmichael" was the name of one of the two bears. The not so memorable memory is the smell from the monkey house. In the late 30's, and early 40's we would watch the City's fireworks display from this area along the canal. They they went on to George Hamid's NJ State Fair Grounds and we watched the fireworks from the grandstand.

Hi Tom: My parents took me to Cadwalader Park for the fireworks. It was a wonderful time. We lived right off Parkside Ave. so it was a short walk. But, I never swam in the canal. Regards
