1938: STACY AND STATE THEATERS

Warner Baxter is the name on the marquee at the Stacy when this photo was taken in 1938. A bit of tweaking has brought out the N.J. Bell Telephone building in the distance. Most of these photos were taken with a very high quality camera; I would bet that it was a "Graphlex."

10 cents. Wow. What a story to tell the grandkids.
I remember when the movies in Tokyo went from 15 cents to 20 cents. Wife wrote home and complained and her Mom told her how lucky we were to only be paying 20 cents.

It broke my heart the day that the RKO State right down the street jumped from ten cents to eleven cents.
My buddy George Such walked up town clutching our dimes so tight in our fists that they left an impression of it imbedded in my palm. This money earned by Georgie and I after working by cleaning up a neighborhood merchant's yard. we figured 5 hours of work, but 4 hours at the movies! What shock to see the price increase. Dejected I began to turn to walk home. George the ever positive kid, said wait, and soon approached the adults in line, asking for a penny. By the time he came back he had enough to keep us in candy throughout the show.
A bitter but sweet memory. We lost George who in later life became head of one of the biggest Unions in Trenton. Shoulda seen that coming.
