1952: BANK STREET APPROACHING PERRY ST.

This exquisite R.C. Maxwell photo will be a very familiar site to those of us who are familiar with the city of Trenton as it was in the 1940's and early 1950's. St. Mary's Cathedral is on the immediate right and the old school building on the left. It warms the heart of this 79 year old geezer to once again see those old cars which in 1952 were only a dream possession for 19 year old Tommy Glover. I have saved the above photo which is re-set to 125 dots per inch, and preserved the original which I had at 600 dots per inch resolution which when viewed full screen, allows one to visit Dr.Thomas' dentist office; you can almost hear the whine of his drill!

The building you identify as the "School" is actually the Convent. Just about where the panel delivery truck is is or was the Gym, where Troop 35 of the BSA met, and of which I was a long time member. The school was actually on Chancery Lane behind the Church and WM Murphy's funeral home. The open school yard fronted on both Bank Street across from the Mayflower movers, and the school on Chancery Lane.

I note the Lipman's Army & Navy sign but don't remember going in there. That would have been across from the Ave Maria Shop, the perfect place to buy a gift for a nun. Sadly, the fire was consumed the church and rectory shortly after that photo was taken.

The fire that consumed the Catherdral took place in March 1956, the night before I left for San Francisco. I remember hearing of the newes as we drove to Newardk Airport. Monsignor Crean was killed in the fire, and Fr. Grimes who was our Troop Chaplin escaped with injuries.
I mourned all the way to the west Coast.

Thanks for the correction, Mike. I will make the change. I thought that building was the school, but you guys who are familiar with the northern section of Trenton keep me honest!
