1947: REMEMBER THE "GOODRICH" STORE?

We could never afford to buy those beautiful, new, and expensive B.F. Goodrich "Silvertown" 600:16 tires back in my teen driving years. Most of us shopped around the local gas stations looking for a bargain on a cheap used tire. This interesting photo brings many pleasant memories of driving past that intersection all those many years ago. A quick look on a "BING" or "GOOGLE EARTH" map will have you scratching your head trying to place this building on the site as it looks today. I think they call it "progress," but on a recent drive through downtown Trenton, all those glass-encrusted buildings reminded me that the Trenton of my youth only remains in my memory and on this website!

HI TOM....I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY THE CITY DOES NOT LOOK THE SAME AS WE ALL REMEMBER IT IN OUR TEENS. LET'S HOPE FOR THE BEST AND MAKE TRENTON APPEAR LIKE THE CAPITOL CITY IT IS. BEST REGARDS

Tom:

I wrote in yesterday, and it apparently got deleted.
This photo is looking west on Hanover St., and appears to have been taken in front of the "Firestone Tire" store with it large concret aprons and huge overhead glass door facing Hanover St. John Curry who you may recall was a long time Freeholder, and than Mercer County surrogate had a travel, and ticket agency next to the subject in this photo on No. Willow St. Looking closely, you can see the State House Annex, not the one next to the Museum, but the original on the left side of this photo. The tall white concrete building. In my visit to see Fr. Dennis two weeks ago, I passed the state house, and noticed that the steps they ultimately built across from the Main entrance to the State house to the Annex is still intact.
The original Commini's restuarant was located on No. Willow St. next to the Firestone store. Later became Willie's restuarant.

The private street Wilkerson Place was just behind "Ben's Bar on the right side of the picture.

Thanks for keeping the old crowd happy with great memories of the past.

Regards to ya'll
