1938: THE LAST CONFEDERATE-UNION CIVIL WAR VETERANS' REUNION?

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War. 150 years ago in May, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln put out a call for Union volunteers to come to the colors. Just up the road from where I am writing this, thousands of Union patriots answered the call and assembled at Camp Olden on the Pond Run Road (today's Kuser Road). Throughout the year, I will be posting interesting and sometimes little-known Civil War history for those who are interested. It is a very sad fact that our local Camp Olden Civil War Roundtable (www.campolden.org) is no longer able to commemorate the event with their once annual Civil War battle re-enactments. It would really be great if all the banks and other civic minded organizations in the area got together and financed this very educationally worthwhile volunteer effort. Unfortunately, Hamilton Township like most of our local municipalities are mired in deep financial constraints and are unable to support such worthwhile endeavors.
