1938: It's an old, old story

For generations, there have been conflicts in the middle east involving the Jews and Arabs. Even back in 1938, bomb throwers proliferated. This article could easily have been dated July 7, 2006.

1928: The Beautiful Har Sanai Temple

One of my favorite subjects in local history is the newspaper stories of our forefathers who came to this country to better themselves. My Italian-American folder is brimming with fascinating slices of life as experienced by the Italians as they came to America to start a new life. Likewise, I have been accumulating numerous material on the Jewish folks who came and settled in the Trenton area, especially the little community which was once a very important part of the city. Union St. Cooper Street, Market Street and the surrounding area south of Broad Street was a thriving community for many years before urban renewal occurred in Trenton in the middle of the 20th century. The fascinating photo and article on the laying of the cornerstone for the beautiful Har Sanai Temple in Trenton is a worthy acquisition. Unforunately, the size of the photo and the accompanying article combine to make it difficult to read. It is however, on file at the library in a size which can be zoomed in for legibility purposes.

1928: Raser & Kale Radio Dealers

As an amateur radio operator, I am very interested in the early years of broadcast and amateur radio. Mr. Ed Raser was a pioneer amateur radio operator, with many accomplishments during his career. This ad, from the Daily State Gazette has been included in the "RADIO" folder at the Hamilton Library.

1951: "So goes our day!"

Here's a scan from a page in our 1951 yearbook; back in the years when boys looked and dressed like boys, and girls had that famous "Hamilton High Mistique!"

1952: Missing Hornets

With 2007 being a reunion year for my next door neighbors in the class of 1952, I thought I would post this notice of "lost" alumni from that great class. Thanks to Marty Bisbee Bogdan for the graphic which she gave me following the last reunion of the class. Come out, come out wherever you are!

The last I heard from her Shirley Sneath Benton was living in Arizona. I was also told that Bill Elliot passed away.

1934: MERCER AIRPORT: "IN THE BEGINNING"

What a difference 72 years makes! Here's an "Aero Service" aerial pic of Mercer Airport as it would have looked to pilots in the 1930's as they descended in their Waco biplanes or perhaps a Stinson "Reliant" and touched down on the grassy landing field at Mercer Airport. Today, County Executive Brian Hughes and his administration are planning on making Mercer into a first class airport with concrete runways, and aircraft electronics which weren't even conceived of when this photo was taken.

1940: North Broad and Hanover Street

This architect's drawingis the building which replaced the original edifice at the North east corner of No. Broad and E. Hanover Street, a photo of which is in the next post.

1940: North Broad and Hanover

This great old photo shows the bulding in downtown Trenton before it was torn down to make way for a more modern building. The post that preceeds this one is the architect's rendering of the building that is to take its place.

1928: W&J Sloane Company

This venerable old line Hamilton Township industry has been operating in our area for many years. In 1928 it was known as W&J Sloane. A name change followed, and it became known as Sloane Blabon Company, Then Congoleum Nairn and ultimately into today's Congoleum.

1940: Electrical Motor Repair Company

This is a very familar company for me. Back in 1952 when I began working for the old Trenton Bearing Company, "EMR" was one of our best accounts. I recall Miss Becker as one of the office employees, and a man with the first name of "Bill," but for the life of me I can't recall his last name. Mr. Ed.Kotz, Sr. was a real gentleman. In fact, on one of my deliveries, he said if I ever wanted to leave the Trenton Bearing Company, to contact him. In retrospect, I should have taken Mr. Kotz up on his offer, because the Trenton Bearing Co. was a small family owned business and morphed into another family owned business which turned the business over to their sons who promptly drove the business into chapter 11. Electrical Motor Repair is is now on East State Street in Trenton, and is still in business. As they say in the old Pennsylvania Dutch verity, "Ve get too soon old, und too late schmart." How true!

1947-1948: HHS '48 Presents the Operetta "Sally"

The following three posts are from my collection of Hamilton High memorabilia. I see many players whom I remember well, among them Class of '51 classmate Lee Belardino, who was a 9th grader at the time. Also, the lovely Betty Beiger Farmer, as usual in one of the leads, Jack Hartman, Bob Reed, Bob O'Dell, and many others whom I remember well. Any feedback on "who else is who" in the photos can be sent to me at thomglo@verizon.net

1935: The Italian American Federation

With this weekend's "Italian-American Festival" at Mercer County Park, it is appropriate to include this historic article relating to noted local Italian Americans in the Trenton/Mercer area. This is just one of the MANY files in the Hamilton Library's Local History "AMERICAN-ITALIAN" folder.

1928 Yardville's Martin Brothers

We old time Hamilton residents well recall the Martin Factory in Yardville. My home is constructed of blocks which may have come from this old line factory.

1915: Trenton's Contemporary Club

The growing CONTEMPORARY CLUB folder at the Hamilton Library contains interesting information from the past on that veteran organization which has been serving the area for many years. Here's the season of 1915-16 schedule of activities.

HHS 1952: GET READY FOR NUMBER 55!

I wrote this column a number of years ago, relating my memories of my next door neighbors in the class of 1952. With the class of '51 reunion soon to be past history, it's time to think about 2007 and your 55th. If you have any memorabilia for inclusion on this site, I would appreciate it. Your material will be handled with "tlc" and returned promptly. Contact me at thomglo@verizon.net or at the library at 581-4051 - 681-4060.
