1940: Remember the "Farmers' Market?

Don Slabicki and I spent a few summer evenings down there in South Trenton selling corn from the back of Joe Bertothy's 1935 Ford Station Wagon. Thirty five cents a dozen, a dozen being a baker's dozen of 13.

1988: 50th Anniversary of St. Anthony Grammar School

St. Anthony Grammar School's class of 1938 featured the music of the late Benny Snyder whose big band orchestra was a local favorite for many years. The Hamilton Library's Local History Collection has a number of "Blue and Gold" newspapers from Cathedral High School. The movie star pretty Rita Culliton

1988: McGalliard School 35th Anniversary

Can you believe that McGalliard School is over 50 years old? Here's a clipping from the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the school

1988: McCorristin's "Oliver"

Back then it was McCorristin Catholic High school. Here's a clipping detailing their presentation of "OLIVER."

Way 'ta go, Gil!

It's not just because he is a fellow Hornet from Hamilton High.....Gil Lugossy has always been one of my favorite citizens, and politicians. Gil has been an outstanding Hamiltonian over these many years, and I hope he will continue for many years to come. Here he celebrated a birthday combined with a fundraiser. Happy Birthday 18 years later, Gil!

Twenty Five Years?

It's very hard to believe that I have been writing for the local community for 25 years. It seems like such a short time ago that I was turning out 'The Way We Were" for the now defunct "Mercer Messenger." I just uncovered this article which was in one of the Messengers Jack Lacy delivered to my office a day or two ago. Twenty five years.....wow, tempus does indeed fugit!

1988: The Greatest Generation

I have devoted many hours to writing and bringing the music of WWII to the members of the "Greatest Generation." These guys and gals are now in their 80's and we are losing them at an alarming rate. Here, Mr. Frank Seaman poses for a photo with members of the "American Ex-Prisoners of War." Seaman was a veteran of World War One and World War Two.

1987 McCorristin High School

Here's a photo of the recipients of the "Distinguished Honors" award at Hamilton's McCorristin Catholic High School.

1986 Steinert Honors

In an effort to bring Steinert and Nottingham High School material as well as Hamilton West, I have found a source in the late, lamented Mercer Messenger. Jack Lacy, former Publisher of that great old paper has brought me a huge file of papers from when he held forth as publisher. His papers, along with mine, and those that remain in the Library files, will assure interesting future posts oa all the Grammar and High Schools in Hamilton. Here's a photo of those who were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, held at the Italian American Sportsmens' Club.

1986: HHS '66 Twentieth Reunion

Hey, there's Ronny Stewart, the best local sportscaster we had in Hamilton...that is, until Cablevision decided that we in Hamilton weren't worthy of local coverage. We miss 'ya, Ronnie, maybe you'll be back if Verizon sees the need for local programming! These Hornets are seen making plans for their 20th high school reunion.

1987: Republican Candidates

Do You remember these folks from our now distant past? Once again that familiar query: "Were we ever this young?"

1987: Hamilton West Band Parents' Club

The Hamilton West Band has always excelled and this photo shows one of the reasons. Here band Parent Rita Peterson presents an award of appreciation to auctioneer Richard Conti.

1986: HHS '55 Thirty First Reunion

Thanks to Jack Lacy for this photo from his collection of "Mercer Messengers" from his years as Publisher of the paper. His collection, along with those I have in my collection, and those which remain in the Library, will allow for posting more HHS, Steinert, Nottingham, and other local persons, places, and things. Stay tuned!

1986: HHS West "Interact Club"

Here's one of I hope many posts for my fellow Hornets from the more recent past. Unfortunately, I have had very few files in my collection until Jack Lacy came through with a stack of "Mercer Messengers" from the golden years of that great old community weekly. The Hornets in this photo are probably pushing their 40's by now, and I would like to hear from you if you have any material you would like posted on this site.

1986 Colonial's New Pumper

This is the fire company of my childhood, and it will always hold a special place in my memories of growing up in the Colonial district. Msgr. McCorristin was a dear friend, and the Chief, listed here as Franklin Peterson, is really the same "Mop" Peterson of my youth. Mop, if you're reading this, I hope to hear from you one day.

1986 Hamilton Hospital Critical Care Event

They say Greatness is Humble. If you look up the word in the dictionary, you will probably see a photo of Maury Perilli. Maury has been a lynchpin in the Mercer County community for well over 50 years. His accomplishments and contributions to the commuity are incalculable, but he just keeps going humbly and quietly along life's path, never asking for recognition, and unfortunately, seldom receiving the recognition he deserves.

1986 Steinert Galre Program

Another photo courtesy of the Mercer Messenger. There's Jeff Laurenti in the back row with the students from the Government and Law Related Education program at Steinert. Jeff and I shared Lectoring assignments this past Easter season at Sacred Heart Church for Father Mick Lambeth's Tennebrae service.
